icehousebob
I run a small part time tree service in the epicenter of buckthorn country(the western suburbs). For the larger ones, I cut them off as short as possible and spray the stump with Ortho Brush-Be-Gone. I buy the quart bottles rather than the aerosol cans because of the strength of the active ingredient. The aerosol has .9% of tricloper while the liquid has 8%, so I just pour it into a plastic squirt bottle and wet the stumps after cutting. I use it full strenghth rather then dilute it, but I don't area spray, I just hit the stumps. For the smaller ones, I have a tool called a weed wrench that works like a fence post puller and pulls them out by the roots. Where I can, I throw a double wrap of log chain around them and pull them with my truck. I have a personal vendetta against buckthorn.
KabNam
You can use Tordon on cut stems or Garlon 3A and spray directly on bottom foot of buckthorn to kill it. We have experimented with some small woodland burns and fire by far is the cheapest and most efficient way to kill buckthorn.
Mark Christianson
Fleet Farm carries a product called Clean Out. We use this on the advice from our area DNR Forester. It works very good, and is very reasonably priced compared to Garlon or Tordon. PS - Tordon is VERY evil stuff. I dont recall the exact details, but if you use something like Tordon, dont expect anything to grow for a year after you spray that stuff on an area. Its pretty viscous stuff. WaveWacker
RoundUp on the new shoots will work. As stated you may have to hit them a couple of times. The best time to cut/stump treat is in the late fall (even though all times are productive as well). The tree is pulling "resources" down into storage for the winter. Cut and treat stump with Garlon. You may be able to get Garlon from a local CO-OP.
