Raven, Yes its true. The guy at the baitshop told me what he would do (I have 3), is to exchange them at those gas stations that have refills. You won't get your tank back but the refilled one will have the correct valve. Have to see if they raise their price, I think when I did that before it was around $10. Hoppe

Some of the exchange places are charging an extra $10.00 to exchange the old tanks for the new ones. Make sure when you get a different tank it has the triangle handle on the valve and should have the letters OPD on it somewhere.

I dont think replacing the valve would save you money. last time i filled my tank it was like $11.00 I recently brought an old style tank in to trade at a holiday station, their price for a full exchange came to $16 something, with the new OPD valve, so the cost was about 5-6 bucks to trade, no brainer??

Appreciate the come backs. It burns me I can't fill my 10 lb tank. It is perfect to haul in my Frabill XLT. And you are right - somebody is making some money off this garbage. And Dennis - thanks for the tip for what to look for in any exchange.

Had my propane tank filled the other day and the fella told me that as of April 1st I had to have a new tank. Seems that there is a change in the type of valve required. I asked if the adapter I had put on it last year was okay. He said no. Said the entire valve was out-dated and a new tank would have to be bought. I have three tanks - for ice fishing and BBQ. Could become costly. I hadn't read anything about a change.

Any one else run into this yet?

The Float is called an OPD float (which stands for overfill protection device). What it does is prevents the tank from being overfilled by the yahoo's at the gas stations that don't know what the heck there doing. My hats off to these people who developed these devices. Remeber a tank is only good for 12 years, Your tank may be do for replacement anyway.

Be careful where you get your new float valve, the one's Wally World is selling are no good for the type of use we are doing like fishing, etc. The valves they sell are breaking off inside of tank, make sure the valve you get has a up and down type float, the one's from Wally World have some kind of swing arm.

I talked to the guy who fills my tanks and he said that our local CENEX CO-OP in Bemidji will replace the valve, test and re-certify, and fill for 20 bucks. Am going to check it out and take my three tanks in. Just thought I would pass this on. Your local LP supplier might be doing the same thing.
