yet another battery question

charged a battery up 2 months ago. Today it was dead- did not use the battery at all. The terminals were covered with a white substance? Is the battery history?

If the battery wasn't connected to anything then I'd say its toast. If it were connected then I'd look to see if something was drawing it down before declaring it toast.
