Repacking bearings

opbguy

Question

I have a 91 Spartan trailer that I need to repack the bearings on. It is a trailer that I would consider on the small end. I need to buy my bearings before I tear the wheels apart. I've been told with 90% certainty that I will need Inch & 16th by inch & 16th. Can anyone confirm this ? Thank you for any suggestions.

DO they need to be replaced or repacked?

If they are in good condition you just need to clean them and repack. You will just need to get new seals. Take one of the old seals with to our local parts store and they should be able to match one up.

I wont know if they need to be replaced or repacked until I open things up. My dilemma is I cant get at this until late in the evening. I want to buy the parts before hand & if I dont need them I will have a back up. I am hoping to find out if 1 1/16 is more than likely the size I need. Thank You.

There are about 3 common sizes. At a lot of places you can find they have a package of a full axle set of bearings with seals - usually in a blister pack. Try getting the 2 smaller sizes and don't open any until after you do your tear down. Then just open the set you need and return the unopened set and get your money back on it. If you can get them where you do business with regularly they shouldn't mind you doing this, just be fair to them and keep them sealed and clean so they can resell them.
