Guest
Looking for an ice expert here. What does all of the freezing and thawing do to the ice. I would think it would make it really weak. Everybody be careful. I don't wanna read about you in the paper. One person going through makes the whole fishing population look bad.
hydro
This weekend when you drill the first hole look down at the cross section of the ice. If it looks clear and solid under the top white layer it's still plenty strong. If you see bubble traces running up through the clear ice, it's starting to honeycomb and lose strength. With the cold nights this week there should be good ice from the middle of the state north. Watch out near shore though, especially where there has been traffic. I was out on Clearwater last weekend and there was a solid 18" of ice that still looked very good.
minneman
I think late ice is safe for (foot) travel till you cant get on the ice from shore, without getting wet.
Guest
I have my shack on a lake near Duluth. I got near it with my truck today and I busted through at least a foot of ice I slammed on the gas. There was water and slush flying everywhere. I got to the main ice road and got the hell out of there. I dont know how I'm gonna get the shck off. Maybe next week if it freezes up good.Ukes
Ely Lake Expert
I just drilled a new hole last night by my ice house. 27 inches, plenty for me and everyone else with trucks around here.Ely lake expert
