preventing bite offs

I started catching some pike last year after fishing some different lakes last year and my go to lures have been buzzbaits and topwater poppers, do most of you use leaders when say using a buzzbait or tie directly with heavy line? I would hate to lose a decent fish because I didnt know what i was doing. grin.gif

use a leader. for spinner baits and buzz baits that don't have a twisted eye, use a little pc of rubber tubing that you have slipped over the U thing . this will allow you to snap your leader onto the lure and not have it slide out of place.

Hiya -

Like Luke said, there are some knotable wire leader materials out there that you can use to tie right to your spinnerbait or buzzbait using your usual knot of choice (though I find a uni-knot a little easier to tie with this stuff...). Luke mentioned Tyger, and that stuff is not too bad. Personally I prefer Cortland Toothy Critter wire - a little thinner diameter and more flexible.

You don't need a long leader - 6 inches will do - just enough to protect the line above the lure.

Have fun. Pike on buzzbaits are a hoot.

Cheers,

Rob Kimm
