Sending unit

I have a 99 Starcraft and the gas gauge doesn't move past E. I have been told it's the sending unit. Is this right on top of the gas tank,round with a couple wires? Is it easy to replace,how much, and were can I get one other than just going to a marina. Any other geusses as to what the prob might be?

Yes, the round part is your sending unit, it should have a pink and a black wire.

Tor ignition key on, so gauges are powered, disconnect pink wire from sending unit and touch black wire, if gauge goes to FULL position it is the sending unit.

I have some tanks but the sending unit is mostly proprietary, since it depends on tank height.

This information is from another fishing board from several years ago. I haven't had to use it yet but here it is:

A lot of people have had this problem with their sending unit. Some fixed it with a trip to the dealer and replaced it with the same unit. The general consensus was the best fix was to replace it with a Livorski unit. Not cheap at $60 but according to this board, much better. Livorski's phone number is 847-548-5900.

If I remember correctly, there is something you cut on this one for the depth of your tank.

I tried the test and the needle went to 1/4 tank when grounded. When the key is on it's at E and when it's off it goes down to 6 o'clock when it's hooked up normal.Don't Know if it did that before or if that's normal.Sooooo I don't know. If I do need a new sending unit can I get an a Livorski or any one that matches the depth within an inch or do you recommend Starcraft because I cant find starcraft parts on the net. The closest starcraft dealer is an hour away. Thanks J.P.

To eliminate sending unit completely test gauge. Take a jumper wire, turn ignition on, and touch black wire with pink wire on back of gauge.

It should mark Full, if not gauge is defective and sending unit should be good.
