Mille Lacs Guy
I am researching the different manufactures that make fish houses on wheels. I am sure everybody knows what I am talking about. I have looked into the King Crow, the Performance Engineering, Klave out of Walker, and one out of Bemidji that I can't recall the name of. If there are others do any of you guys know the names of these makers and if they have a HSOforum. I was thinking of one around 6.5 by 12 to 16 feet. How big of one do you need to fit 4 bunks? Any other info on these would be appreciated. Thanks!
Guest
Kafman manufaturing out ot Minot ND has my vote hands down for the most versitile shacks. They are made to be used in all seasons and will power up and down in a flash. Whopper Stopper
I also have one of Franks houses. I use it for both hunting and fishing. I also have a double door in the back so I can load my Goldwing in it and head south when the fishing slows. A word to the wise ....... The manufactures have come out of the woodwork in the last couple of years. This leaves you in the drivers seat for options and dickering. Also ask for some names of people that have bought from different makers. I tried to contact as many as I could when I bought. I was surprised at how much info. was given to me by un-happy customers. I like my house and have had no complaints. Trying different spots is a snap. My only problem this far has been some resorts on Mille Lacs. A few want an arm and a leg to pull it out of their access. I had to hunt around a bit but now all is well.
Grabs
Whopper, what resort are you fishing out of? And which ones wanted an arm and a leg? I know a lot of the East siders want to charge a seperate fee for those of us with these houses. I fished Brandt's last season, they only charged me a $90 access fee, but then I didn't get a road plowed either. This year I am at Week Ends, again only access fee ($100) and I am certain that if we had any snow I wouldn't have a problem getting to my house. But I would like to hear experinces from others about the resorts on Mille Lacs and how they treated people that have these shacks. This is good information for those of us with these shacks, especially if I ever decide to start looking for a new resort again.
Guest
One other place I found was American Surplus in Milaca,320-269-7922. One thing to maybe ask everone you talk to is whether or not the house is less than 102" wide (LEGAL). Some of the houses are too wide. The guys I talked to said that they had sold hundreds of houses wider than 102" (LEGAL)and never had any problems. The very nice lady at MNDOT told me otherwise. My .02.Just somthing to think about.Good luck!
Grabs
Franks' RV in Ramsey makes Ultra Shacks. If you search the internet you can come up with a bunch, but I think you have most of them covered, check out an Outdoor News paper, they are all listed in there.I have an Ultra Shack from Franks RV. 8x16If you are on Mille Lacs this weekend, or any time you are welcome to stop in and take a look. E-mail me and I can give you my cell number so we could meet up.[email protected][email protected]
Whopper Stopper
Grabs I go out of Fishers. One thing I better clear up. I would have no problem paying $100 or $90 to go out of a resort for the season. I only fish Mille Lacs a couple of times a year. Last year our friends at Lakeside wanted me to pay for a seasons pass to fish one night. I am trying to remember where I had all stopped, I am sure Agate and Liberty, were two that I passed on. Frank from Franks RV was the one that alerted me to watch where I went out of. Fishers charges the price of a vehicle, and if you stay overnight I just catch him again in the morning.I know there were about five either side of Agate that wanted a seasons pass for a one nighter. I just wasn't going to pay it.
Mille Lacs Guy
From what I understand Ice shacks can be as wide as you want them because they are not licensed like other trailers would be. This is what one manufacturer told me anyway. I dont' know if this is true or not.
Grabs
It doesn't matter if it is licensed or not, there are certain limits to what you can trailer on a pubilc road. The 102" limit is correct, which is why the 6.5' models have the wheels on the outside and the 8' models have the wheels on the inside.Licensing is another point too, if you only use it for icefishing all you need is a current shelter license to trailer it, obviously only during ice fishing season. Otherwise if you use if for camping or hunting you will need a plate for it. Many just go and register it as a homemade trailer to avoid the expensive license fees for RVs. doubleUcubed
If you are too wide or going to build one wider than the 102", add a slow moving vehicle sign. You'll be legal but can only travel around 30 - 35 mph.
JIGSTER
I am also looking at different makers of these houses and have recently visited King Krow in Kingston and PerformanceEngineering near Glencoe. All I have to say is I know which of the two I would choose and the time to stop and take a look was worth while.Take a look at the frames before they are built on and the suspension and you to will get your answer!(welds) Keep Jiggin' JIGSTER
Guest
OK Jigster...which one is better in your book and what is the price difference between the two?
JIGSTER
EyeCatcher, you asked so I'll tell you. Performance engineering is the one I would choose. As for the prices to me it doesn't really matter because I will pay for quality. I was just pointing out things for Mille Lacs Guy to look for.Since you're a welder did I hit a nerve? Keep Jiggin' JIGSTER
Guest
Nope...didn't hit any nerves! LMAOBut, the welds would be one of the things I'd check out first. If I made them I'd guarantee the frame-work(I don't know if any mfg'ers do that).
