Hunter education firearms safety

Anyone here a volunteer instructor? I have been teaching for a few years now and have been looking for other instructors to share classroom ideas with. There is the required stuff to teach, but there there must be others who take it up a notch and make the class better.

I'm not a teacher, but will share the one thing that I totally remember from my class when I was 12 (28 years ago).

Our instructor went over the rules, and mentioned a couple times, but didn't key on it, to always check for ammo in a gun 100% of the time, no matter if the person handing it to you says it is unloaded or not. Simple enough, right?

Well, a bit later they had a single shot bolt .22 and they were using it to show everybody how to aim with iron sights, or to make sure all knew how to aim. (I now know that was simply a little test for something else.)

The whole class went through aiming quickly at a target on the wall, then handed the gun to the next guy. Even adults were in the class. You guessed it, nobody every checked for ammo, but everybody checked for safety being on.

After all went through the "aiming" the instructor had the gun, and with it pointing in the air, and we were in school gym, he asked if everybody checked the safety - "yep". He then took safety off and pulled the trigger.... Booooooom!!! He had a blank in there.

We were all shocked and scared. He then scolded us pretty harshly for not checking for ammo. We went through the aiming again, and this time everybody checked for a round in the action.

To this day, I think that was the best lesson, and definitely one that I remember, and that I share with the young kids who go with us now.

It was dramatic, maybe a normal teaching method, but I remember! Thanks for volunteering your time to keep "us" all safe.

I'm a 10 year instructor, and one of the most effective tools I use for class is the laser ed rifle. It can be used for many situations, probably one of the best is determining dominant eye for those individuals that are right handed, left eye dominant. It's a tough time to get most of these kids to shoot left handed if they have been instructed at home on shooting right handed. The laser ed rifle shines here showing them where they're shooting, and why it's best to shoot with the hand of your dominant eye.
