Swapping lower units?

Im rebuilding a 1959 StarCraft so I want to stay with the older engine. I have a 75 horse evinrude with electric shift that works good but the power head is fryed due to some water and vacume lines mixed up on the auto choke by the previous owner. I bought a 75 horse johnson that is one or two years older than the evinrude but runs sweet,I thought! I put it on the boat to try it out and when I power up in forward at about 1/4 throttle I beleave the gears in the lower end slip(just for a sec.) and then its fine.It does this every time.I tryed to ajust the linkage but it didnt help. Im wondering if I can swap the lower units! These moters are early 60 models,

I forgot to mention that the johnson lower unit is a manuel shift type.

So you are swapping the bad manual shift lower with your good electric shift. I don't know if it will work, you have to pull both of them and check driveshaft splines, they might be different.

Check the drive shaft splines like Val said. I don't know if the shift lever and linkage will work though.

You might be better off changing the power head if the splines match up.

I'd look into the slip first before I tried the above.

Could be something simple like the shear pin.

Hannay's (I could of spelled wrong) on Central and Broadway could help! They helped me threw some very tough stuff with old boat motors. They are in Mpls. Mn.. Or it could be just trial and error. Unfortunatly, the error is very costly or the shaft will just not slide in. The main thing is you do not want to damage female splines in process. Again like stated above, the shift linkage may not line up. !!!Becareful of this, I have bent those small little shift linkage shafts before!!! Elec. might not have this. In the end

fixing the current one might be best option. Tension's hit it right on the nail head.

The drive shafts are the same so Im OK there, Theres only two wires comeing up out of the elect.shift lower unit so Im wondering how it functions and how I would hook it up! PS I live on the Iron range Shackbash. Thanks for the tip on Hannays but I don't get to the citys very often.

The 2 wires just plug into the remote control. There is no external solenoids, they are inside lower unit, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I would replace powerhead instead, but it's a tougher job.
