filling 1lb propane tanks

There was a great post on this, but I just went through the whole board and cant find it.
Here is what I remember from it, as I am sure others will post what they remember also.
- Tanks are hard to get filled all the way up.
- Often times they leak right back out.
- Dont think it is legal to transport refilled tanks in a car.

I have seen the adapter to do this at Cabellas, but I am just buying the tanks and purchased the adaptor to run my Mr Heater Buddy heater on a 20# tank.

Hope this helps.

Once again.
You need to open the bleed valve. Make a tool out of tubing cut a slit across it.
Put your 20 pounder upside down/ screw on 1 pounder/ open bleed valve till vapor starts to coming out./Open 20 pounder. When vapor turns to liquid its full (7/8ths) . Turn off 20 pounder then close valve on 1 pounder. If your worried about over filling weigh the tank empty then then subract that from filled tank. Long tanks hold 1 pound fat tanks hold 1.02 pounds.
Been doin this for 30 years and the ONLY way to do it right.

I own one of these adapters and it works great. They fill best when the large tank is warm and the 1lb. tanks are froze. I like to put the small thanks in the freezer over night. Most will fill up as full as when they were new. Some will not. I bought mine from Northern Hydrolics.

I seem to recall hearing somewhere (probably on this site) that you might be wasting your money in buying the adapter. The reasoning is that with the new valve system being implemented by law, it won't work. The adapter as I recall requires you to invert the 20lb tank to fill 1 pounders. Since the new valves have a safety feature that closes it when the tank is tipped over, the adapter wouldn't work. Obviously, it would still work with the old style valve on a 20lb tank, but soon, you will not be allowed to refill these unless they have the new valve on them. That's what I heard at least.

Mat you can buy the new adapters for ten bucks. Take them off when you fill 1 pounders.
In reguards to putting your 1 pounder in the freezer to fill it. You my be able to squeek a little more propane in the tank but there is no way its even close to full.

Surface Tension,

Wondering if you can give me a couple of details?

1. how do you make it so you can use the opd
tanks and still fill the 1lbers. Can it be removed/replaced somehow?

2. can you give a little more detail on making the tube/tool for opening the bleed valve?

Thanks in advance.

Widetrack You can buy an adapter to convert old tank to new fitting. Once your tank is filled take the adapter off. You will still have the old valve on the tank. Do you know what a valve stem tool for a tire looks like? Thats what your going to make. Use brake line tubing. With a hack saw cut across the end to make 1/4 deep slit. If you take a close look at the valve on the 1 pounder you will see the what diameter tube to use.

Hey, Surface Tension I don't know what you are talking about. I have filled nearly a hundered of these 1lb. tanks. About 1 out of five fills less than half. The other 4 will fill full. Like you just pulled them off the store shelf.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
