Installing T8 Yamaha kicker

Bigsmitty

Question

I just purchased this kicker. I want to put it on my Crestliner Super Hawk. Is this a do it yourself job or should I hire an expert? I'm pretty mechanical. Never did this one before though. Im wondering about the controls for it. Do I install another control box behind the one for my 115hp? What do most people do? I dont think I have room for a dual binnacle control. Any advice would be appreciated.

Also, anyone know a good place to get the controls, cables etc.

My controls are below the main ones. The pivot is almost on the ground. It works pretty good. I am curious what made you buy the rmote version rather than the tiller. I currently have the remote and would like to have the tiller. The lack of turning radius is the main reason.

Good luck, Kidwalleye

Its not that hard to rig the kicker. Just place the control box where you can reach it from your seat comfortably. Usually I placed them below and a bit behind the main motor control. As far as steering goes, tie it to your main motor with a quick detachable rod. Make sure you have enough room for the main motor to turn to its limits before you link the two. Thats the only tricky part.

Why the quick detachable rod? Is there a reason why I would want to detach it? As for going with the remote version, i do quite a bit of trolling in rainy nasty weather and Its nice to be under my canopy. Besides I do more finesse jigging and rigging with my bow mount autopilot.

Thanks for the input!

Smitty; the reason for a detatchable rod is for when you arent using the kicker. Its just a whole lot of extra effort to be steering that also when its in the up position. Long trips down a big lake or skiing or tubing would be examples. I rigged boats for years and always mounted an extra ball for the quick detatch in the splash pan to hook the kicker steering rod on when you arent using it.
