4/3/07 report

[The Grebe]

Man, this mornings fishing was rough! I didn't have a day this miserable all winter and I don't think I was ever as cold!

We tried several spots on 3 different lakes this morning. At one of the stops, my friend had gotten 4 really nice Crappies in the 12 inch range last night and in spite of the weather, we were hoping they would be bumpin again this morning.

Well, the 3 of us threw everything we could think of at em, in a multitude of colors and even tried to temp em with crappie minnows....today was not the day...we had a few fish on, but I don't think they were crappies...little sunnies is more like it.

The only thing that was landed this morning....after a spirited battle on his behalf, a battle that had the drag screamin and the rod bent in a U shape.....(Just kidding)about a 2 inch long Crayfish that pinched a slow moving feather jig!

Where were ya fishin? They were startin here also just outside the shallows,now this weather,they just quit last evening,I dont think they'll be back for a few days but maybe then all at once.

Thats what we ran into also. A few of them were biting last night and then they shut off when the temp started dropping.

We were hoping that the weather wouldn't shut them down completely, but I guess it was wishfull thinking? Two days of sunshine and we'll be haulin, no doubt.

What month is it????? One thing I have been observing for the past several years is that the weather pattern seems to cycle in extremes of unusually cold to unusually warm at about a 3 to 5 week timeframe. If that holds true, opener should be mid 80's to low 90's. I just started a weather journal this year to record low-grade scientific data to bolster what have been foggy recollections so far.

I keep a journal, mostly related to fishing, but also has weather notes...

One thing you'll want to watch is the transpiration cycle...

In a backhanded way this weather might be a good thing... When the leaves bud and sprout early, the humidity goes up sooner in the year, before the high energy summer pattern of fast moving storms can come in.

What ends up happening is that all annoying 3 weeks of soaking rain in Mid to Late May.

And honestly... I'll take putting off Ice out by a week, if it means I don't have to spend the 3 prime weeks of Walleye Fishing in a soaking 48 degree drizzle.
