ice lures summer fishing

Guest

Recommended Posts

I was just curious to see how many people take their ice tackle in the boat with them. There are many good lures for ice fishing that could be fished verticle during the open water season as well. I'll admit my ice fishing lures don't see much action in the summer, but I intend on trying them more this year, especially this spring while jigging....What are some of the lures you use in the spring?

I use my gear all year long. I basically use tear drops though. Towards the fall when the crappies start coming up and hiding out under the diving docks I will use jiggle sticks or my ice poles w/ reels. Makes it easier to fish by the boat. I have seen others do this out in the middle of the lake on some flats. Catching Crappies and walleyes.

I agree with The Chemist, teardrops work great in the spring and summer for panfish when tipped with a mayfly, mealworm, waxie or other live bait.
Good Fishing, Matt.

Some of the best bluegill fishing I've had has been on the hottest darn days of summer...using...ice gear! Drifting the basin area for suspended 'gills with large marmooska jigs (tipped with whatever) really turns the trick. Just keep an eye on the flasher to adjust the bait to the depth of the fish...9-10 feet seems to be a "magic" range, but they can obviously move up and down. Staying in the basin area and away from weeds WILL drive the average size WAY up! You don't get peanuts in the abyss...it's where the boys with protruding foreheads roam.

p.s. This is a great way to introduce a kid to fishing...no casting, no snags, plenty of time to enjoy a snack and lots of action. Telescoping poles in rod holders really shine here!

Ooohhh...Yahhh..., the old humpeads. Yes I guess I do use some of my winter gear in the summer. Mostly crappie and gill stuff. How about the angle eyes, pimples, darters, raps, buckshots........ A leadhead jig replaces almost all of these once spring rolls around. But I think they'd be very useful under given situations. Keep the examples coming......

Hey Flyingfish!

Good to hear from ya. I have used buckshots in open water vertically and slow drifting! The times I have used them, were successful!

I think it comes down to attracting fish no matter season you are in! If they are hungry, I am sure most ice stuff would work.
I just placed an order for some Angel Eyes!

I definitely will give them a shot during the open water season! They are suppose to be a great stream presentation as well!

Hey Flyingfish, if you bring all your winter stuff along I am going to need to get a bigger boat or you are going to have to leave some of your Power Baits at home!ScottS

Jim,

With the action under the ice I think they'd do wonders in a stream. Only problem with them being so light, they may not do so good in faster current. You may need to add a swivel or something to prevent your line from twisting....

Scott,

Yep...bigger boat..as if your boat isn't big enough already. How's that add "don't leave home with out it" that's me and all my fishing gear. Better watch out this year. I replaced all the rods that got stolen last year plus some. Of course, now that I'll have a bigger garage, I'll just have to buy more stuff to fill it up.

I sometimes use jig-o-bit/rockn'roll types tipped with leaches or minnows on LOW while wally fishing reefs with slipbobbers. Rattle spoons while vertical jigging over the rocks sometimes too. Pretty much the rest of my winter tackle sits in the garage thru summer.

Regards...Fisky

I use a lot of leadheads all year long, as well as whistlers, but I guess these are year round lures anyway.

flyingfish,I too love the ice fishing teardrops for some of the panfish in the summer. As for the Walleyes I end up using the tried and true lead head fireball or bugeyed shorty,I have tried some of the jigging spoons for perch out on the humps it was ok

Avalanche, are you fishing that Nils Master over deep water for pike? I am looking for a good technique to get those pike to bite in the deep water in the heat of the summer.ScottS

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
