I was wondering if there are any catfish in the mississippi river up by merrifield/brainerd area? I have never gone catfishing before but it sounds like alot of fun.

Yep.

If you watch In Fish, every now and then, Doug S will be river fishing for cats. Frequently, it is the Miss, right near their office.

you probably will not find alot of monsters, but you should be able to find more 5-8 lbers than you can shake a stick at.

I strongly suggest against it. Unless of course you like fishing bodies of water with much fewer people and catching lots of fish at the same time that is.

Does anybody fish for them by the dam in Little Falls? I just started a new job in the area and was wondering if they are around?

I have never fished the upper Miss north of the cities, but I was under the impression that historically St. Anthony falls limited catfish to downstream from St. Paul, and now the dams do. The DNR HSOforum does not list catfish as being present in the upper Miss. Are they wrong?

Flatheads are limited by the Coon Rapids Dam. Channel cats can be found up the Mississippi quite a ways.

Elk River, Monticello, St. Cloud, etc...

It is generally known that Flathead Catfish aren't further north than the Coon Rapids dam. I rarely hear of a Flathead being caught above St Anthony Falls but there is no reason that they aren't there.
