Question

Keep in mind that I am somewhat new at this but when setting up a 24v trolling system does it matter if the 2 batteries are the same batteries? I purchase a new (used) boat and it came with a 24v bow troller. I currently have the starting battery and 1 other battery that I used for a 12v transom mount troller on my old boat. I am looking to pick up another battery but I am not sure if I need to get the same battery that I currently have?

Another question I have is, can I run both the 24v and 12v trollers off of the same 2 batteries? confused.gif

For best performance you should have matched batteries in a 24 volt system. If the batteries are mismatched your performance will be only as good as the weakest battery (basically). Kind of like the weak link in a chain…..

Yes, and no.

The two batteries will be connected in series to get 24V. Your 24-volt motor will connect to this series arrangement of both batteries.

Your 12-volt motor can connect to either ONE of the two batteries, but not to both batteries at the same time.

Sure, if you rewire.

But, you can't have the same two batteries in a parallel 12-volt combination and a series 24-volt combination at the same time. That's what I thought the OP was asking about - can he use both motors at the same time, from the same set of batteries, without rewiring.

I suppose there is some type of switching arrangment one could concoct that could go back and forth with the flip of a switch, but you still couldn't use both batteries in parallel and series at the same time, afaik.

Not really. Actually, you are better off running a 24-volt system if possible. It will be slighly more efficient, IMO, than a 12-volt system because of more tolerance for slight voltage drop. Also, you can use thinner wires to carry the same power vs 12 volts because twice the voltage requires only 1/2 the current to deliver the same amount of power (Watts).
