Motor size for the river?

Is a 6HP motor on a 12 foot boat OK for in the river. I would use it in the Minnesota river between New Ulm and St. Peter. When the water level goes down. I'm just thinking it might not have enough pwoer to go up river. Any thoughts?

It will get you up stream, but hope your not in a hurry! And dont pack very heavy!

I run a 14ft jon boat with a 8hp johnson and with me(155lbs) and my gear I gps my boat on the snake river at 16mph up current and 18mph down and that fast enough for me besides when the river gets low here you only go 4-5 max enyway.

Thanks for the input. I think I will hold out for a 10-15HP setup.
