MarCum LX-5 For a Vex FL-18

I know of a guy who is asking to trade his LX-5 for my FL-18 straight up. He says he just prefers the vex and that is the only reason. I'm thinking about it but never using the MarCum and having nothing but fantastic luck with my Vex I'm not sure what to think about it. Any Suggestions?

I made the switch this year to the LX5 and I am really glad I did.

Being able to adjust the zoom to any area in the water is a big plus. I also really like the dual beam transducer. I almost always fish with an FL18 and an 8 pretty close and I easily filter out there interferance.

It may take a bit to get use to ( I was lucky, Dietz gave me a 10 minute tutorial on all the featues) but now that I am comfortable with it I would never go back. If you dont take him up on the offer let me know and my son will grin.gif

Slot-There is nothing wrong with either unit. Both the MarCum LX-5 and the FL-18 are great to have. But if you can trade even up... I think its crazy to not do it. The LX-5 has more features... The dual beam traceducer and the movable zoom are just the most noticable! The anti feedback and other things will sell you on it.

Thanks Dietz,

My only worry is I have the very first fl-8 made with the 30ft scale instead of the 20' scale (which is the best on a boat because of the 30' scale IMO) and now I have the FL-18 for 3 years and I have never had one single problem with either unit. I know I have read tons of coments on the VEX VS MarCum debate and I'm not trying to start one. I guess it's just the fear of change.

If you are worried about being able to understand the screen or display, its all the same, just alot sharper on the Marcum grin.gif

I'd go for it, if you don't like it you can always find someone else to trade with, alot of guys would like to upgrade smirk.gif

Fiskynut,

Hate to say it but that old school Zebco 33 still is on one of my poles and has caught more fish then I can count and is still catching fish today. More then I can say for about 5 other millenium reels that I've thrown in the garbage that have cost a lot more.

Indeed the venerable Zebco 33 is also still being manufactured to this day I believe. I have an old Abu-Matic 41 LH spincasting model that goes back to the 50's and it's still working too but I don't use it any more. Bet I could still crank in some fish with it though if I broke it out.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
