New baitcaster, What line?

Hello,

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I can't find the exact thread. Today I'm buying my first ever bait caster. Abu Garcia Revo SX. What do you suggest I buy for line? In the past I have liked the stretch of mono but thought I might try something new since I got a new rod and reel. Any suggestinos? P-line? Mono? What is the easiest to pull rats nests out of?

For a first baitcaster, I would recommend using an affordable mono for a while. Something like Trilene XL in 14lb test will be easiest to untangle and cheap to replace if you end up having to cut it off.

Superlines are nice but tough to untangle and much more expensive. I would hold off trying them until you are pretty comfortable.

Depends on what you'll be using the baitcaster for in regards to best line choices. I've found that mono is a little more forgiving in casting mistakes that we all make more than the superbraids are. I'm able to deal with those mistakes because I like performance of the braids some but and have been doing this for a while. If you plan on doing a lot of casting and being new you may want to start with a little limper mono to start with until you build up the skill and then move to the superbraids once you build up more confidence for the performance advantages. Lots of option out there that fit that bill.

Great advice above!!!... Pick the line for the application that you plan on using the rod for. IF the rod is going to be used for lindy rigging walleyes, you would put a far different line on it than if it was going to be used for slop bass or pike.

as RW stated, not a bad idea to rig it with a cheeper 14 lb mono for staters as you may have a few opps moments to start out.

Def some kind of limp line, don't start out with something like Fireline that'll need some breaking in. Start out throwing/practicing with some heavier baits that'll be easier to control, less wind affected, less likely to give you "professional overrun". Practice getting the thumb pressure right on the spool to prevent the overrun, don't just depend on the brake to do the job. With a little practice, you're gonna love the control of throwing a baitcaster!

I also recommend that you use mono until you get used to casting with the baitcaster. You'll undoubtedly get a few backlashes at first, and it's better to do it with mono than with a braid.

After you get used to the baitcaster, you may want to try PowerPro braid, or Sufix Performance braid. These are really good braided lines for typical bass and northern fishing. I like them because they sink better for deep fishing, and for trolling.
