Wobbler - Tony got that way from eating Pugsleys grin.gif Hey, Pugsleys are made in Devils Lake right next to a bait shop. Excellent location. cool.gif

Lip Ripper - You do know of the Frugs taste for school boys? mad.gif Ever make his Jambalaya? It's great.

But seriously, Tony did write the quintessential articles on the future of waterfowling about 5 years back. Check em out if you can find them.

The John "Zippy" Gillespie talk got me to thinking about another quintessential Outdoors show "Fishing with Bill Sr."

Have you guys seen this? It seemed like somebody's home movies of guys lying in a field while little specks of dust (presumably geese) flew in and out of frame. In another episode the film rolled for 10 minutes as the guys walked through a field looking for pheasants. Unfortunately the mic didn't have a wind muffler and so it sounded like you were sitting at the end of runway 23-niner. We never saw a bird either. There was even a fihing episode up near the arctic circle that was comprised of several shots of unkown people catching unkown fish in an unknown location with unknown techniques. Great!

This guy makes Tony Dean look like Ernest Hemingway.

I agree with The Chemist and others, and think we could pool our collective talents and come up with an informative and entertaining outdoors show that would be better than most of the junk out there now.

FishingMinnesotaTV! Check it out!

I started my own show a couple years ago with two of my brothers. Its only on in Minneapolis right now but we are gathering sponsors and will be expanding very soon. My biggest problem with most shows is the lack of variety. Most anglers are interested in several different species. Besides variety people want to see what is available within a reasonable distance from their home. As far as Bill Sr. goes, when I'm not paving parking lots in the summer I work at a hardware store that just happens to sponsor his show. I did some research on how he is getting his money and it is very simple. Every store has money available for advertising either from manufacturers of products carried in the store or directly from the coop like ACE or DoItBest. He has been able to collect several thousand from many different stores. Since the owner of each store hasn't invested their own money there is no one for Bill Sr. to answer to. This means he can put just about anything on the air. Besides the fact that most people think his show is terrible he has managed to score some nice trips to Canada and Alaska. Needless to say the hardware I work at is no longer sponsoring Bill's show. I can't wait to see all of these new shows from you guys. -Rick

Hate to let the cat out of the bag so to speak, but Rick and I are currently working on just that- a FishingMN show.
We've been kicking the idea around and are looking into possible options.
The vision is to have area anglers/hunters be guest "hosts" and cover all aspects of fishing (and hunting) in Minnesota...And ONLY Minnesota.
It is still a little over a year away, but it will happen. We will be asking everyone on this site for ideas and who knows, you could be a guest host!

Awesome news! There is obviously a lot of talented people that share this forum and it will be great to see how another medium will reach out to even more.

ICF, your show is great, keep up the good work! I'm sure some of the guides, resorters, and entrepreneurs on this site would like to talk to you about new opportunities to expose themselves and their products to the big MSP market. Let us know when we can catch your show.

Now he is the ultimate in advertising.

That's all he could talk about Saturday. "The Zip Lure"

Didn't it look like the guy on the skates was getting tired of his yelling? Almost as bad as Roland Martin.

Ultimate Outdoor Sports Show format.

1/2 in length.
1. Decribe the activity you'll be doing and where. Activity that fits the season (Hunting or Fishing). 3 minutes

2. Intoduce you guests. 2 min.

3. Go out and hunt or fish. Showing the scenes of catches or shots. 15 min.

4. Give a list of equipment used. 2 min.

5. Product Advertisements. 8 min.

I think more time should be spent watching the activity than watching advertisements.

I think that it's the Linder's that don't over advertise w/ in the show or am I wrong?

Lip Ripper,
I can't believe you are cutting down your idol John Gillepse! I mean you bought the PBR snow suit, the Zip lure, and the jiffy auger! I bet you could be the guest fisher on that show! Holy cow Wobbler you caught another big walleye what are you using? THE ZIP LURE!!!!

Instead of having a cook, I think it would be great to show how to prepare different types of game/fish. Not gourmet food but food that an ordinary person eats and has time to prepare.

Also how about tips on how to clean game or fish. I for one would love to learn how to filet a northern w/ out all the bones.

It is difficult to watch some of the fishing shows lately. I am sure the cost to make each show is enormous. Advertising is a great way to offset these costs but when the need for money outways the need to produce a quality show it is time to reevaluate. I have seen Tony Dean many times at fishing/outdoors seminars,he is much better than his TV shows lead you to believe. He is more than cooking or the "perch patrol", he is a true gentleman and a great outdoorsman.Perhaps the need/want to retire is pushing the need to advertise. Bring me back to the days when it was all about teaching technique and etiquate. True fisherman know what works and what wont simply by trial and error. I dont want to be deluged by advertising I simply want to see someone catching fish when I cant be out on the water.

Rick - Let me know when the show is ready to come out to the Hutch area!

I can't believe you guys are ripping on John Gillespie! Sure he gets a little excited at times, but what a job he has - Every week he gets a "free" gudied trip to a different Wisconny hotspot. While he can be annoying, most of his guest hosts are pretty good.

The worst thing about the current TV line up is now I'll have to put up with Denny on the FLW on Sunday mornings. I guess Denny has finally found the "High Road"....

Why don't they tend to let out the names of lakes as often? I've seen a bunch of Ice shows and they must be Buchers where he doesn't say where he is. I would like to know if it's a lake near me where I can try. Like I'm going to be able to find the exact spot he's fishing anyways.

Well chemist,
I'll tell you right off you wont be seeing any names of lakes on the FishingMN show either and this is why-
Can you imagine how much fishing pressure a lake would get if you watched someone have a really good day on any given lake? It would be very detrimental to the fishery (unless it was LOW, Leech, Mille Lacs, etc) if these lakes were named. Also, do you think that a guide or a fisherperson would want a show to name their honey-hole so everyone would then know about it? Think it would be hard to get anyone to do that don't ya think?
These shows are more about passing on information on techniques that one can use on any lake, not about painting a big "X marks the spot" on a body of water.

I can see your point. My whole thing is what works in one place doesn't always work in another. And for me I'm not going to run to each lake they have on TV. I don't have the time.

I can't pay the fees that a guide asks for. I was thinking of taking the wife to DL on the Perch Express but my god we could go to Alaska and fish for that price. unless I'm wrong I thought I saw $1100 for 3 days of fishing.
But how much do you think that TV airing is going to affect the pressure versus the word of mouth?

The lake that I'm on has been over fished. I remember going out 3-4 yrs ago and catching 1lb+ crappies and not just like five in an evening but more than a limit. I don't go out to fill my limit I go out to enjoy my time on the ice and forget about work. My brother and I kept a tally of all crappies caught that winter(Christmas - Feb.) 256 12" crappies made it in the house, of that only 60 went home for eating. The rest went back in the lake to be caught again. Since then the # of fish has dwindled and so has the size.

How was this lake affected? Too many peoplpe coming out and taking limits night after night. And they found out by word of mouth. The walleye population on this lake has gone to dump also.

I myself don't have the time to run around to find exact spots to catch fish so that my kids can actually catch some that we can take home.

Sorry for venting. I'll step down off my horse and get ready for the weekend.

Kevin - Bucher's open water fishing shows are informative and well produced, but his so called "Ice Fishing Specials" are just great big Frabill advertisements. Joe doesn't appear in any of these "specials", and they always have a rep from Frabill on hand to tout their latest product. And the regulars have a different moniker depending on which type of fish they are fishing for. I just don't get it.

Chemist - As a fishing guide, I know advertising is a necessary evil. With the advent of the world wide web, here I am communicating with you about fishing from my livingroom.

Folks want to catch fish and search the web for the lake with the latest hot bite. That's OK, but it all comes down to perceptions, expectations, and personal responsibilities

I am a dedicated selective harvest fisherman. Sometimes that comes in conflict with my being a guide. The reason we fish is for the experience of being in nature, for fellowship, for the challenge, and other esoterical things. Food gathering should be farther down on the list.

I'll more than likely be doing a fishing show sometime soon. I hope the one I am doesn't suck. grin.gif

Hi Guys: I will have to admit I missed the Tony Dean Cooking Show. But as a woman that hates to cook that is probably good. But did have to add my 2 cents about fishing seminars. We attended one in Fargo that had a guy from down south (don't remember his name) but we really enjoyed what he had to say about fishing for bass. But I think it had more to do with the southern accent, the gorgeous hair and the tight Wranglers. He definitely had our attention!!!! smile.gif See it is all in the presentation!

tony dean is just a wanna be AL LINDNER
