Kinda quiet around here lately. Must be something worthwhile going on. No luck fishing? No turkey hunting plans(I know most of you are too far up nort), how 'bout DNR hearings coming up? Maybe time to break out the shovels again, eh?

How bout this, post your favorite WI outdoor activity during the course of the year. I'll start:

Preseason turkey scouting, early April, about sunset, trying to get one to gooble on the roost. Whats special is you're in jeans and a flannel and its comfortable...you can feel and smell spring coming. The days are getting noticeably longer, the fishing gear needs attention. Then, a gobbler fires up to your owl call and its affirms that old man winter is done for.

Boy, I got spring fever bad frown.gifgrin.gif Later.

Kind of hard to get spring fever when I look out the window and see a foot of snow with more coming. I was out fishing today and it was slooooooooow. Still about 2 feet of ice though so I'm far from done with the hard water fishing. wink.gif

Its a tough call. From that big flock of Canadian Mallards dropping into the decoys on a cold snowy windy day 3 days before the season ends to the arrow disapearing into the bucks chest cavity seemingly in slow motion, to the relaxation of drifting down the mississippi river on a spring day when you know summer is coming, slowly jigging that 1/4 oz jig until it stops on the uplift and you set the hook into a nice fat 'eye.

Or the thunderous flush of a grouse covey as you then bring that 20 up with 6 shot on a warm Oct mid morning hunt. Or trolling crawler harnesses on the St Louis River on a warm May day during mid week after opener and all the amatuers had to go back to work. You have to take your jacket off by 10 am as its getting too warm for your jacket. Or trolling On Lake Superior near the lighthouses for salmon or lakers early in the morning while the sun is starting to rise on a late April morning. Life is tough

I haven't been out ice fishing for about a week in a half now. I did a ton of ice fishing this year. With all this snow I don't see myself getting out after pannies much.

I caught so many walleyes and sturgeon this year threw the ice I think I'm going to skip my Rainy River trip this year. Just don't feel like battling the crowd. I might just get the looper rod out and shore fish for bows and cohos till I can get the boats out trolling. I'm ready for spring smile.gif

Favorite times is a toss up between sitting in my blind overlooking a 100 dekes watching a nice flock of bluebills trying to get the right angle on the wind. Hoping on this 3rd pass they have got it. There wings cup and lock, they begin to dance trying to slow themselves down. Your heart beats faster as you click your safety off. You know you got them.

That or trolling the big lake on a calm spring morning with the sun coming up. All the lines are set. You got your favorite sticks on the outside and your best spoons on the riggers in the inside. You look at your ball line on the finder and see a shadow. You look at the rod on the rigger and it starts to bend a bit more and bang it goes straight and then buckles over as the drag begins to scream. Everyone in the boat jumps to there feet, game on!

Whew, finally got some time to actually weed through some posts on here.. Been a busy ice fishing season for this fella... But a good one... Glad to hear others have had some success as well...

For me, I think my favorite time of the year is ice time... But when the ice forms across the deep stretches of Lake Superior here in the Apostle Isles... There is just something about watching this deep water freeze and then be able to walk, drive, and fish on top of 100 FOW to over 300 FOW... The drives are what gets me though... riding amongst the islands.. seeing the ice formations on the rocky shorelines.. and the vastness of this body of water.. The quietness can't be beat as well... Being miles away from someone to just think and take in the area is tough to beat for me... Very secluded.. Just me, the ice, and the fish... Sometimes you are so secluded, you have to talk to the fish!! smile.gif

watchin a muskie break the glassy surface of the water at dawn and on the end of your line is a close second, but the deep grunt of a buck echoing through the woods during rut and then watching a slob step into view like it was a picture in a magazine and tryin to keep your knees from knocking together as you draw your bow.....definitely the best
