Outboard engine problem...heLP?

Dkoy

Question

My brother has an older, '90 something lund console with a 40hp outboard engine(not power trim/tilt). When he is going full throttle/max speed, it keeps making multiple jerks. Anyone know the cause of this? He has not brought his issue to a small engine mechanic yet but I do know that his motor should be good, rebuilt new I believe. Also has anybody in here tried to put on a power trim/tilt kit and how good is it? Worth buying? Any info would help. There's lotta good people on this HSOforum with awesome skills and experience. Thanks.

The motor jerking along sounds like a fuel delivery issue. couple of things to check.

First, check the fuel line from the tank to the motor. If it is kinked at all, it will starve the engine for fuel (had this happen on mine).

If not there, Check the fuel line itself. many times the priming bulb can go bad and not allow fuel to pass as needed.

Finally, check/replace the fuel filter. Many times this little item is neglected and is the cause of many poor running motors.

this is just a start though...Inexpensive and easy to do..then test again.

When you say jerk is this a loss of power or does the moter keep reving? If its a quick hard jerk(sounds and feels like the transom is going to be ripped out) I beleave its slipping out of gear.Check your shifting adjustment it may have came loose and moved a little!
