Jeff Dosch
Warm weather has finally arrived and the walleye fishing has really taken off. We have been catching a lot of walleyes from 14-25 inches in a variety of areas. Old flooded points and rockpiles in 18-25 ft have been good this past week and we are starting to find more and more walleyes in shallow water ( 4-12 ft). The shallow water walleyes have been more aggressive but the time frame for the bite is shorter. Perch fishing has still been good and still in deep water (35-45 ft). Our best days have been just before a front or during a stable weather pattern. Walleyes and perch are both going to be starting to stage in pre spawn areas soon and this means some of the best and most aggressive fishing of the year. If you were to ask the locals of the area when their favorite time of the year to fish was, 90% would say March. This time fo year is when the most trophy walleyes are taken during the ice fishng season. The great thing about March is that sometimes the walleye bite can last throughout the day. pikerliker
Jeff that's GREAT news! I'm coming to Devils lake for the 1st time ever this March. I'm bringing my 2 boys 13, and 11, my nephew 10 and my dad. I've always heard about Devils Lake walleye's and have wanted to fish the lake for years. I finnally set up a trip and will be there the weekend of March 10/11. We are going to be renting a house from Woodland resort during the day and staying in town at a motel in Devils Lake. I think it would be great for the kids (and me ) if we could get into some of those big walleye's! How is the pike fishing during this time? Are they found in the same area's as the eye's? It should be a great trip, I'm looking forward to it! Are there things for kids to do in the evening around town? ~piker
