No Ice Fishing In Western SD For A While

We had 40 degrees all night last night and hit 62 today with some wind. Got nervous so went and got our house of the ice and about 2" of water already. They're calling for 60's the rest of the week with no freeze at night. Guess it'll been football playoffs and cards at home this weekend.

i guess you guys have it worse than we do.. the temp here in minot right now is 50 degrees, our temps are supposed to get to freezing tomorrow night tho, hopefully the ice won't get screwed up to terribly much by the end of the week

Just talked to a guy that went to check his fish house on Franklin lake and it had water around it and ice was soft. He said there is water around the shore and he took his and his neighbors houses off today. It is suppose to be warm here all week so better check on your fish houses!

Waterbeater,

I'm a former West River boy. Hearing you talk of the temps just reminds me of how frustrating it can be to try to ice fish in Western South Dakota. I used to spend a good portion of the winter fishing open water in various places!

I love the area you're in.......wish I was back there. Need a ranch hand?

Huskminn,
Good to hear from a fellow West River guy. No matter if you leave, you're still a West River Boy. Where did you live back here anyway? As for needing another ranch hand, always but you know the score, the pay REALLY sucks. Take care out there,

I grew up on a small place just east of Rapid City. Spent a lot of time hunting and fishing both in the Hills and on the prairie. Used to hunt grouse quite a bit out in your area. I go back quite a bit to hunt and fish. Just hunted deer in the Hills again last fall.

You can e-mail me at [email protected] if you want.....that way these Minnesota folks don't have to listen to our South Dakota talk.

Hey there's fishing all over the place. The plains (were I live) is littered with stock dams, just ask and most are more than willing to let you in. And the Hills are full of lakes stocked with trout and there are a few around Rapid City with perch. If I were to move to the hills, Spearfish or Hill City would be my chioce. If you like Walleye, Lake Oahe is only 200 miles from Spearfish and is great fishing I hear. So come on out mpls_ham, but don't tell anybody because we're kinda a secret out here in Western SD.
By the way as far as fishing conditions, it finally got cool enough to strengthen the ice so I went out yesterday to try a trout dam I had stocked a couple years ago and got soaked to the bone. It must have rained a couple tenths of an inch. It's the strangest weather I've ever seen. Now today the wind is blowing 50 mph with gusts of 65. I can't get a break. Good luck all.

I was up to a big dam Saturday here in central SD (I'm a west river boy too, west of the James)and drilled through over 20" of good ice. Then we got about 55/100s of rain Sunday followed by 1 inch of snow. We did end up catching a bunch of northern Saturday.

Hey, Waterbeater, I don't like to see you advertising Western South Dakota so much. I'd like to move back there someday and I don't want all these Minnesotan's buying up the land before I get there! wink.gif

They don't need to know that there's a dam in every draw, either.

I can only hope that they'll get stuck in Sioux Falls and never make it all the way.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
