20 lb. Propane Tank Weight?

Bushwacker

Question

I have a 20lb. propane tank that weighs 20lbs. I am leaving for a trip to Winnie and if it is over half I am not going to refill it. Does anyone know what the empty weight of a tank should be? Our 100 lbers have the tank weight written on them, but I can't find it on this 20 at all. Thanks for any help.

I found the answer if anyone else was interested:

BBQ tanks hold 20 lbs of propane. The tank, when empty, is 18 lbs, given or take 8 oz. That means that a full tank will weigh 38 lbs. If you weigh your tank and it only has 1 or 2 lbs in it, it may not work.

on the collar of propane tanks you will find

a bunch of numbers, you want the TW or tare

weight. so if the TW is 18.7 on your 20 lb'er,

you add 20 to the TW and that is what the tank

will weigh when full. a 100lb tank will have a TW

around 73 you add 100 and the tank will weigh

173lbs full.
