My first flats over 30 lbs!

It finally happened. After nearly three months of flats in the 1-10 lb range, I finally got my biggie. Friday night (9-10-04) I succeeded in landing a 40.5" flathead while fishing on the Mississippi River. I just started chasing flats this year and my only goal was to catch as many smaller fish as I could, refining my skills for next season, but now the bar has been raised a bit higher. My girlfriend's 10 yr old son and I were fishing above a wall over a fence approximately 12 feet above the water's surface without a long-handled net. All we had were a couple of 15 foot stringers and the hoop of an old landing net rigged for pulling up smaller fish. It took some manuevering but we were able to get enough of the fish in the net to hoist it over the wall, measure it, photograph it, and release it. 40.5 inches in legnth and a girth of 27 inches, estimated to be in the 30-35 pound range. At this point I was extremely satisfied and ready to call it night, but I decided to try one more cast. Picking out the smallest sucker minnow I could find I thought I' d try for one of the smaller fish and let the lil' guy reel it in. Well, wouldn't you know, that's when the REALLY BIG 'N decided he needed a snack. It took fifteen minutes to even get a glimpse at it and once I had it wallowing at the water's surface we knew there was no way we were gonna succeed at pulling him up 12 feet over a fence, so we photographed it right there in the water just before the hook pulled loose. This fish was considerably bigger than the the first one I had caught and I wouldn't even dare guess just how big he was, I'm just glad to know they're both still swimming and I'll be looking for 'em next season!!

Hooked on flats 4 ever,

Manny

Manny, bring your pics up here. I'll scan them for you and get them posted. If you can get to Gander Mountain about 1:05pm, I'm usually there during my lunch break. If not, let me know when and where we can meet up.

I can't wait to see what you caught!

Thanks for the comments and info. Dark, I will remember that in the future. Lost is in my neighborhood and I will have him scan the pics for me. I can be at Gander tomorrow at 1:00pm, so let me know if that works for you Joe.

Thanks,

Manny

Here ya go Manny, let's hope this works. Been having trouble finding a server that this FM forum would recognize. Hope this works!

gforum.cgi?do=post_attachment;tempatt_id

gforum.cgi?do=post_attachment;tempatt_id

Actually, the url has a bug in it - find a server location that any browser will recognize without going through a password and it will work fine.

Thanks to Joe (lost) for posting the pics. I can't see them today, but Dark30 saw them yesterday so I know it worked, even if only for a little while. Hopefully they'll show up again so I can see how well they turned out on the 'net.

By the way, it's nice to get a little recognition from the seasoned veterans, such as Dennis Steele and Dark30. I've seen the photos and I know you guys have more than a couple big tabbies under your belts. Thanks for all the info you guys share and post. I've learned a lot off of the catfish forum and plan on being a regular from now on!!

Thanks Joe. I was going to ask you if you could e-mail those pics to Dennis but you were on it already. Going up north for a lil' grouse action this weekend so I'll hook up with ya probably tuesday to pick up the originals, same time, same place.

Dark30, I meant to tell ya, I might have to take you up on that one day... wink.gif

Good fishin',

Hanson and Tombow, thanks for checking out da fish! I'd still be chasing them flats, too if it weren't for the hunting season. I usually decide to hang it up in mid-late september, as far as open water is concerned. Besides, being a rookie, I was more than happy to end the season on a high note!!

Joe, I didn't make it to GM on tues, but I can't be there today either. Company awards luncheon cruise on one of the Padelford boats today. Thursday looks good. Thanks for holding on to those pics for me...

Not a problem. Did you win any awards at work? I've got the pics in the glove box waiting for you. I'll probably not bring them in with me.

By the way, Jim says if you're willing and able, he'll put us on some real nice bass up in Zimmerman.

Manny, you still around? Hello Manny. Joe to Manny. If you want, I can just leave your photo's on the photo board at GM or you can stop by where I work to get them. I work just around the corner in the "Recall" building on Main St (across 694 from Home Depot).

Hey Joe, been a little busy lately. Just pin the photos up on the board at Gander, I'll retrieve them from there. I was in Cub yesterday but that was around 11am and I had to keep moving. How's the fishing been? See ya around sooner or later...

If you wanna catch mini-flatheads, then Long Lake is the place to be! Can't seem to fish that lake without hooking into what seems like more bullheads than mosquitoes.

I did catch a 3.7 lb, 22 inch channel cat in there this past Tuesday evening. Beautiful little fish. Need to catch more like that!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
