I find myself waiting for open water too.The one thing that gets me through is being able to catch a few cats through the ice.

I have fished with Stu McKay, otherwise known as the Highlander. So many channels over 20lbs, so little time. That is why I toss and turn the night away, dreaming of the day I get back to Lockport to engage my E-cat #3 and Ambassadeur 6500 C3.

Ahhhhh. grin.gif

Stu, my man, you still out there? Still busting the chops of those kids that ruin your outboards? rolleyes.gif

I dream about it, and I haven't even fished for cat's up there yet! Boar, do you know if the greenbacks are in the river with the cats in early June? It'd be fun if we could spend a little time after 13-20 lb. walleyes after finishing up with hundreds of pounds of cats! Maybe Stu could answer that question if he see's it? Or anyone else that's familiar with that stretch of river.

I'm truly anxious for the cats, but I couldn't pass up a chance at the largest walleyes in the world - if they're there in June.

Dennis, I'm guessing you've got a prior engagment for that second weekend in June, but if not you should really plan on this trip. Dark said he was interested in going, and I'd be more than happy to pull that little duck boat of yours up there if you wanted to tag along? After all, you are the epitome of a catfisherman. You need this trip under your belt at least once! Just think, you could spend something like 20+ uninterupted hours riding in a truck with me. Now who could possibly pass up an opportunity like that?

Can't wait Boar! Giant catfish are what dreams are made of......ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz....ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz......ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz.........ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzz....ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ........ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.......Sound familiar?

Sorry Sam the greenbacks will be out of the river by June. The season open the 8th May and U may get one the 1st couple of days of the season. We have alot more snow this year therefore there should be lots of flow and if there is flow there are kitties. Ever try the 7000 instead of the 6500. The kitties have torn too many of my 6500s so I have switched to the 7000. If U can't make it til June the kitties will have to just satsify U and I am sure they will.

Thanks for the quick answer Canuck. I had hoped they'd still be up there, but I suspected they'd already be out of the river. Too bad! I've caught some really nice walleyes during the fall run, and seen some absolute hogs get pulled out as well. I think I can be satisfied with just under 20 catfish between 25-40 lbs. though. TeeHeeHee...

I are there any tried and true techniques to catch the "bigger" fish in the river? Our group, like most, will be strictly catch and release only of course. I'm just curious if some of you folks that know the river up there are aware of any particular bait, size, color, or presentation that consistantly produces the larger cats.

25lb is NO problem but 40 I would only dream. Have seen several in the 35 though. The heavier kitties are in Sept but June is a good month too. Check just prior to coming up and I will let U know their bite of choice at that time. It probably will be cut whole sucker. Sugguest U freeze some up and bring them up because they are scarce at that time of year. Yes there are a few areas where the hogs hang out but we have NO problem in sharing.
I am off to blow Stu out of his driveway. It blew like crazy the last couple of days and he is blown in. We were supposed to be going out for the greenbacks but so be it.
Jim.

Opens 8th May. If U are coming up for the opener make sure U bring gear for the eyes cause they should be still in the river out by the Notch. And Yes we will make it for at least a couple of hrs on the water.

Thanks for the info Canuck! Look forward to meeting you up there this spring. I'll buy you a cold one and we can swap catfish savy. I'll give a you a ring when the time comes.

See ya'

Hey, just outta curiousity, I've had great luck with fresh cut sucker myself, but I've heard that fresh cut big river chubs are even better? Any truth to this? It really makes a difference on the Flatheads down here - not that I would be an expert on Flatheads, but I still know it makes a difference. River Flatties really love a big lively river chub over a sluggish store bought sucker. Smell or taste maybe?

Sam: I can't really say about river chubb vs sucker as I personally havn't used river chubb because they are not readily available up here. I have always had a good supply of suckers so have stayed with them until they turned to goldeyes. I take a whole sucker and cut into 1" steak pieces and use that. I would be nice to spend some time on the water with a few of UALL or at least on the dock swapping war stories.

I posted a thing under RedRiver as I messed up and had posted earlier that Manitoba's season opened in the south on the 8th May, well I was WRONG it usually opened the 2nd Sat in May but this year it is the 15th May so maybe the eyes will be out of the river by then, I HOPE NOT.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
