Ice fishing out of a canoe on Minnetonka

2 years ago my buddy and I went canoe fishing near Aitkin in April. In the morning there was 4" of bad ice and was breaking up. We paddled the canoe right through it. By sunset the lake was 90% ice free. We caught several crappies, some small sunnies and a few norts. Craziest way I've ever fished.

Last year, there were a couple of guys sitting in the truck on shore watching a some tip-ups in the Chisago channel. There was open water in a semi circle around the landing with ice behond that. On shore sat a canoe. Flag goes up, they hop in their canoe and paddle out to it. grin.gif

Craziest way I've ever seen someone fish!

I talked to a guy just the other day that lives on Forest Lake. He told me that in years past has seen guys go out with float tubes testing the ice with a chisel. 2 guys, each with a float tube, rope in between. When the first guy gets out far enough to where they think they want to fish, the other guy comes out and fishing commences. Gotta love it!
