Johnson Outboard

Question

I have an older (1987) 50 HP Johnson tiller that goes into reverse when I push on the shift handle but when I take pressure off the motor kicks back into neutral. I am looking for some suggestions regarding the possible problem and source of technical information to aid with the repair. Yes I would like a new motor but finances says I need to try and repair.

Sounds like a simple linkage adjustment. It has been a few years since I have had a motor like that, but if you follow the lever back into the main compartment, there should be a linkage adjustment that allows you to adjust. It should be fairly simple. A little lube may help as well.

No reason to get rid of the motor...that motor is solid!!

There's a gear-and-yoke assembly in the lower unit that takes a lot of wear. The dogs on the gear get sloppy and causes the shifter to jump. I had an 86 35 hp repaired a few years back at Bruce's Outboard in Sauk Rapids for under $300.
