Automactic Ice Fisherman?

FishGUY

Has anyone seen or used the automatic ice fisherman? It looks like a self setting tip-up that uses a fishing rod. I saw it on a TV show and it seemed to work well. Is this legal in Minnesota? And if isn't why does the HSOforum say they sell it all over MN. What are your thoughts?

Hiya -

If it sets the hook mechanically, it's not legal in Minnesota. Actually had a discussion about this with the DNR not too long ago, and their answer was pretty definite. Spring devices are explicitly forbidden in the regs in fact.

As to why they are sold here - their sale is legal, but their use isn't. Unfortunately, some anglers will be educated on that distinction the hard way this winter I imagine.

Saw these at Fleet Farm. Looked interesting... grey area for the regulations though. The hook set is actually done by the rod...simply releasing it from a set position. not sure how this would be viewed as a 'mechanical' hook set.

Frabill has an automatic jigging tip up...would this pose the same problem?

Looks like a nice set-up. I've seen home made versions of this type of rod holder, but I think most guys use them for lake trout.

They recalled all those auto jigging tip-ups from Gander. Not sure why though. What about the Finicky Fish Factory?
