What kind of lights do you guys use to navigate at night?

I have been using a couple of cheap off road lamps mounted at the bow of the boat. They thow a decent beam forward and to the side.Spots are great but since they are designed to only light up a "spot" they do not thow off a wide enough beam to run on plane at night. You also get glare from the boat when holding them at the helm. That glare can also ruin you night vision.I am thinking about getting a more powerfull set of offroad lamps in the 55watt range to mount on my River Pro, but would like to see the amp draw on the lights.I have not seen many lights that give this info.

Hey Fishhead...Uh, sorry...Mr Steele,

I got a pair of those 55 watt Halogen Projector Beam fog lights. I think you saw them didn't you? I mounted them on a peice of 2x6 and the whole thing just sits on the bow. I can move it around to provide a nice soft yellow light on the interior of the boat too.

I don't know about going 90 through 1" of water but for just motoring they're great. Remember, I'm your best friend! mat.gif

Man Dennis, you gotta be crazier than me at night. I gotta spend an evening jumping sandbars and snagpiles with you once. Sounds like a rush.

Night time's when we're usually parked up safely on the bank, quiet as churchmice. All those snagpiles are mean enough by day. I don't know, maybe those lower stretches of river offer more navigable stuff. Guess the kind of water I'm used to is so thick with wood, shallow and nasty that daytime navigation's tough enough. Think I'd get a kick outta watchin you plow through the river, though-- especially those 85-degree angle bends where I'd end up beached way up in some corn field at night.

Guess that's not much help with your light question, is it? wink.gif

Hey Toad
Ya I think we should get together this summer and do some cattin. We have talked about it for a couple years now, lets do it.
The section of the river down here is not as tangled as some of the sections you fish. There a few areas that are really backed up with snags but I know the area well and can buzz through with no problem.Beside I only have to avoid the big objects sticking out of the water, not the ones under. smile.gif
Dark and I have done a little motoring up around Granite Falls but we have only checked out the section from the ramp up to the dam. There are spots where you must be on plane to get through.OK not must but I am a little impatient.Putting and poking along is too slow.I either want to get to the fish or get home and I want to do it NOW! smile.gif
Don't call me MR. Mister! smile.gifI won't be wearing a tie till I die.

Dennis; I used a single light on the front of my boat. The kind the is mounted on a tractor finder. Small but not a spot light. That way I can light a wider area and in most cases both banks and I keep it so none of the light comes inside of the boat. Because of glare in the boat. It is a 12 volt light and my battery has never run to low. Of course I only use it on the move. They only cost about 10 bucks plus wiring.

Sounds like a good plan to me.

I've packed up the ice fishing rods and I've been through the my tackle box twice already this week. Everything is in it's place and ready to go. I do have to figure out what to bring with to Arkansas next week; once we get the Turkeys we are going to go after some trout. 8 more days to go. Wooooo Hooooo!!!!

I have used a spotlight that the beam is "glareless", nope not to me, I perfer the m&m method (moonlight and memory), so far have had pretty good memory.

Ya!I have heard about your "moonlight and memory" technique. Some thing about climbing a tree with your boat last year? smile.gif

Spot lights suck because thats what they are. They only light up one spot.A guy needs to light up a wide area if he is going to navigate at night.
