Road kill

Recommended Posts

What are the rules for road kills. On my way to work this morining I saw a large buck laying in the ditch. Big 8. Tines 10 inches or more. 18 inch spread. These are estimates as I was going about 70. I just started thinking about what You can legally do with the deer. Maybe go back home, get the truck and call the hwy patrol and the DNR. That would be a nice rack to have. I wouldn't mount it and tell people that I shot it or anything like that. From what I could see, it was very nice deer. If I had shot it I'd probably put it on my wall. Now I'm really disappointed to be typing this and not parking that deer in my garage and getting to work late!

i dont know the legalities on taking just the antlers, but laswt year i had one that was hit right in front of my driveway, called the DNR and they issued me a permit that i just had to come pick up the next day. Really funny and cool conversation piece that i left on the fridge. It says Deer Roadkill Possession Permit right across the top.

i have never hit one but I call the sheriff if I see a fresh one and have probably claimed 15 or so in my life.

sometimes there is lots of good meat and sometimes it is a waste of time.

I got burnt once and must have claimed a deer WAY older than the freshly dented car with it's flashers going would have suggested. They do turn green at some point....

You can call the sheriff or police department and get your name on a list to come get them as well. you can bank on a call on saturday night at 1:30 am.....

Make sure to call the local authorities, the animal and ALL its parts are state property, antlers included. Usually the co will let you have them but I have seen differently with moose for a few understandable reasons. It is the CO's discretion.

The deer was gone when I got there after work of course. On my way to the Dover exit to go back home I found another deer in between the four lanes of I-90 with the rack cut off. This morning just past that deer I saw a big basket six on the edge of a cornfield looking for a date.

if you stop and pick up a dead deer with out calling the local police or sherriff it is considered poaching dont do it without calling stopped last year to pick up a hit deer and take it to a place that has caged lions where the police take them and sherriff pulled up and told us we were poaching because we didnt make the proper calls he let us go because we were at the lion place but man close call so a word of advice dont do it
