I went out to a lake today that I figured would be a good bet for big gators. Well, I didn't get set up til about 9:45am. Guess that pretty much takes care of the sunrise bite! oh well. I got set up on a ledge where it dropped from 4'-22' in about 20 yards and then gradually tapered out to 30'. I sat in 10' of water and had a live decoy as well as an artifical. had one pike come in at 11:20am that was about 26"-28" 4-5lbs. Didn't give me a good shot so I didn't take it. I then had one come in at about 4:15pm that was about 32"-34" 9-11 lbs. Did't really have a good shot at that one either so I let it swim. Still a long day on the hard water for only seeing two gators. Oh well something just keeps pulling me back out there grin.gif!!

went out yeaterday on the ice spearing. I only saw three fish all day from the time i was there. Only threw at one, and then let the other ones go. Was a ok day, but i wish i would have seen more. Water was very clear, yet the panfish were everywhere. Going to try and make it out this week again.

I went out both days this past weekend. On Saturday I set up in about 12' over a sand bottom and saw a lot of perch and few sunnies. I saw 5 pike that all came in along the bottom under the decoy-didn't throw at any. Had a real small one about 20" come in and stare at the live decoy for a few minutes before swimming off. The coolest thing of the day was seeing a 3 lb smallmouth chase my decoy sucker around for at least two minutes until finally inhaling it. I had a hook in the minow so ended up catching and releasing her.

Sunday I went out in the afternoon and saw three pike -ended up spearing two of those. Both perfect eaters 2-3 pounds.

Good luck to all and enjoy your underwater window. It sure beats whatever is on television!

Bass-N-Spear, your optimism and enthusiasm is what we need more of around here! You are always helpful to those asking questions and never seem to get your feathers ruffled. I wish many more days in the spearhouse for you! I've said this once and I will say it again - the people I have met that spear are some of the most enjoyable sportsmen and women to associate with. A somewhat solitary and unique bunch though.

Pikeslayer,

So, what is the best method for cookin' Tater-tots and Veni on the wood stove?? Do you just put some aluminum foil down on top and toss 'em on??

I remember when we were kids we used to do grilled cheese sammi's that way - but we had to stoke the fire to get the job done and the heat about drove us out of the shack. LOL - I also remember getting them started and then having some bluegill start messing with the bobber... Next thing you'd know my brother would say, Hey, smells like somethin' burnin'..... Oh well, just scape off the black and you might find a sandwich underneath...

Anyhoo, seriously - how do you do your cookin'

PS - Steelhead fishing = Veni on a stick over open coals. Mmmmmm.....

Did anyone happen to get out today?? What a beautiful day!!

All day long I was regretting not having bailed out on work. I saw it coming and in hindsight I wish I had pulled the trigger and taken th eday off.

Hopefully this little cold front won't affect things too much tomorrow. Oh well, best time to fish is still "whenever you get the chance".

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
