DARK30
ACCORDING TO THE MN DNR, A TROPHY FLATHEAD IS ABOUT 36" LONG AND THEY HAVE SAMPLED ALOT OF THEM IN THE MINNESOTA RIVER. I HAVE, THIS LAST YEAR CAUGHT A FEW OF THESE TROPHIES AND WOULD AGREE THAT FLATHEADS OVER THREE FEET LONG ARE COOL AS HECK TO PULL OUT! SO WHAT IS A "TROPHY" CHANNEL CAT? WET NETS! vern
I would say over 20 lbs for a real trophy channel, although a 15+ is really big around here. A 10+ on some of our smaller rivers is a pig. You guys have to make a trip up to the Red River in Selkirk. Unbelievable trophy channel cats up there with a lot going over 20 lbs. We're going up sometime in May. Guest
I'll be there in late May too Vern. Get my early spring sumo piggy fix. Yup-yup!Up there over 28 is a trophy class piggy. The 20-23's are thick, 50 to 60 a day is very doable.I broke a ton on one trip, man that was a work out! We-Ha!Goes to show you what special regulations on a prime fishery can achieve.------------------Backwater Eddy.......><,sUMo,>Backwater GuidingEd Carlson(701)-281-2300 http://home.talkcity.com/ResortRd/backwtr1/index.html
vern
Hey Backwater Eddy, maybe we'll see you up there. We're shooting for the 3rd weekend of May. It's a long drive from Mpls. but well worth it. We went up 2 years ago for the first time and had a blast. We even had fun catching the goldeye for bait right off of Stu's dock. Our biggest was over 25lbs. CANOPY SAM
When it comes to catching trophy fish out of a river system I'd have to say a trophy is what you make it. Some fellas think a trophy walleye has to be 10+, but I know plenty of rivers where a 7 or an 8 are about the biggest your gonna see in your lifetime. It's all about time on the water.Personally I'd have to see a 25+ fork to call it a true trophy, but I spend a lot of time fishing for cats. I'd give my left atrium to have a 26 - 30 lb. (replica) of a channel I'd caught and realeased, hangin' on my wall. Now that would be a conversation piece over tea and strumpets..........
