Remington 870 problem

There's few things in life that make me as mad as when my gun acts up in the middle of a hot shoot. Now the problem I have is that the plug in my 870 is getting jammed in the end cap of the magazine, and therefore the spring is stuck in between the plug and the end cap and the shells just slide around in the magazine. I don't know if this is a problem with the spring being worn because it almost seems like it is getting pinched in the end cap. My temperary solution was to flip the end cap upside down and have the outer screw cap hold everything in, and it has been working but I don't know if this is doing anything to the gun and I would like to get it fixed right. If anybody knows of a solution it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am going to assume that when you refer to the chamber, you actually mean the magazine.

I don't know if this will work or not for your problem, but the first thing I would do is to clean that area and all of the parts really well. When you do, inspect the parts and see if they look damaged. If so, just order that part from Remington's HSOforum. On that gun, there isn't that much to replace, so you might just want to order a new spring and a new end piece.

I don't think you will not hurt your gun with your temporary fix. I have lost a few end caps in my day and the guns work just fine.

You may have got 'lucky' and hit that sweet spot where the grooves in the plug line up with the slots at the end of the magazine tube. If not it must be dirty, isn't a whole lot to go wrong in there. Take er apart and run a rag through the mag tube and as stated, check that plastic plug for damage. Hang in there, guarantee its an easy fix.

I have an 870 and same thing has happened to me, I took it apart and gave a deep cleaning and lubed it up, worked perfect after that.

I shot an 870 for nearly 10 years before "upgrading" to a Browning BPS. If that 870 was chambered for 3 12" shells, I would probably still be shooting it. Talk about a reliable gun. I agree with the rest. A very deep cleaning may be the best solution. If that doesn't solve your problem, take it in to your local gunsmith, I'm sure they could pinpoint the problem at a quick glance.

Ive used an 870 express and magnum Wingmaster since i started hunting 12 years ago.

The only thing i have had go wrong was that on the 870 Magnum the rivets that hold the "ejector" had loosend and it made it stick out and broke off. I was told it was not an uncommon event. Cost $70 to fix though

Wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

sounds like cooters got it right. those grooves have to be hit just right and remember to twist it after it goes down. or it could be the end cap that pushes on the shells is getting hung up on something. if your still having problems take it to a dealer. good luck

I have a 870 Super Mag and I CANNOT use Federal ammo, they jam the gun. I already had a gunsmith work on it. Went out test it and jammed again. Any other brand has no problem, I love the gun, but I cannot use Federal
