How long do mallards stick around in this weather? I am going out tomorrow morning for any ducks. I have not shot a green head in 2 years. What was really cool. I worked a pair of them but me only hunting for 4 years. I didnt know how to read the birds and I shot at them about 40 yards and missed.

just give it some time and when the northern mallards come down then it will be alot of fun. last year we were shooting greenheads till the last day of the season and then when we were hunting late season geese the mallards were landing in our geese decoys. good times.

Last year saw tons of mallards and buffleheads on the last day of late goose season. That was dec 19. we had ice sheets 30 yrds long floating down the river. however, last year we did have a warm spell in the late duck season.

oh no, that would be giving away my late goose honey spot

however, you can find spots on the crow, st. croix (sp) has some nice islands, just make sure they are on the minnesota side. many down near the refinery. the crow in wright county (try delano area) the crow wing up north, and the mississippi across from camp ripely are good spots. also the mississippi south of the metro is good. i try to hunt rivers the entire season except for early goose. i have never tried the minnesota or cloquet up north. two tips, your first time out, go during day light to get to know the spot, for safety reasons, and get a prop just for river use, you will the heck out it. every off season i have to file mine down. AND WEAR A LIFE JACKET, i have had some close calls. hope this helps.

hey airdriver--- can I email you with some more specific questions about river hunting for ducks...I am wondering what size boat is too big for that? for retrieving ducks can you beach your boat and wade out to get them or do you need to start your boat up every time? you can email me too @ [YouNeedAuthorization] at ya hoo (contact us please)
