slug barrel ?

Does anyone know of a place in the west metro that would have reasonable prices on slug barrels? I would like to get one for a BPS since I will be forced to hunt closer to home then our traditional northern minnesota excursion.

Should I get one made by browning or is there an aftermarket barrel that is more cost effective and has good quality control?

I have a Mossberg fully rifled barrel on one of my 870's. Its a good shooting barrel and seems to be of fine quaulity. I'm sure Browning will rip you pretty good for one of their barrels.

Most all sporting good/gun stores have some slug barrels.

I have a Hastings barrel for my BPS. I think I got it at Cabelas. I have the rifle sites on it but if I were to do it over I would get a scope mount barrel and put a red dot scope on it. You can look them up on the HSOforum I think they are around 250.

Thanks for the replies, It just seems like $200-250 is alot of $ for a barrel if I will only be hunting in a slug zone for 1 year, but you never know it may come in handy in the future.

I would definitly get one as well. You will have it forever. I hate the performance of bird barrels and rifled slugs. Outside of about 30-40 yards I do not feel confident. However with a rifled barrel shots of 100 are definitly takeable

DRH is right, then mix that riffled barrel with some quality sabot slugs and you have a deer killing machine in your hands!

I agree with all of them. I switched to a rifled slug barrel years ago, I will NEVER go back. They are just too accurate. The extra range is nice but man you can get some really tight groups at 30, 50, and 75 yards. As for type, I would go browning or hastings, I don't have any experience with a mossberg, but hastings makes one of the best aftermarket barrels out there. Spendy though.

I would have to agree with the Hastings barrel.I have one on my 1100 and does a very good job.I also have a Mossberg shotgun with a Mossberg rifled slug barrel and that is not to far behind.

One thing I would do for sure if you buy a good rifled barrel is go to a rifle range or a place you can shoot and try some different brand slugs for the gun.

I am pretty sure that your only options for a BPS is to go Browning or Hastings, because I looked into it. To my knowledge, Mossberg does not make one for Brownings. It will run at least $250 new. I would call around and see if anyone has a used one. You never know what you will find. Also - If your not to picky, for $300, I think you might be able to find a new or used gun with a slug barrel.

I hunt with a rifled barrel and with the new Hornady sabots or that new Winchester slug that has been out a couple of years, I have a killing range out to 200 yards. My gun drops 12" at 200 yards when sighted in a 2" high at 100 yards. I have shot deer out to 150 yards with it. I do use a scope though. I have killed quite a few deer with a shotgun / sabot combo.

My only complaint is the cost of the ammo. $12.99 for 6 shots adds up in a hurry.

Thats 5 deer with one shell left over for next year . cost is the same when you factor in that you won't shoot a box at a deer. One shell, one deer.

C'mon! I hunt in a large party and I get to shoot a lot of deer. I also practice every now and then, which is where it really adds up.

How's the recoil on the SSts? I'll be shooting them out of my 870. Either those or the Remington Premier Core Lokt Ultras. That's what I have right now anyway.

I think they kick hard. I shoot and 870 as well and I put a limbsaver recoil pad on it. That helped. I also had the barrel ported at Magna Port. That also helped. For sighting in, I bought a Lead Sled, which really works well. I used the SST's to kill three deer last year. Very high velocity.

Put in perspective and it's not nearly as high as the cost of missing or wounding. Add up all the other costs of the hunt and it's worth whatever it costs to know you're shooting well. If you have a cantilever scope mount, sighting in should be very minimal.

I use the Remington Ultra Core Lokts and they work great, the 870 shoots about as good as a shotgun can with a rifled barrel and 4.5x scope. I wasn't so much worried about spending a lot of money on ammo when I sighted that scope in for the first time as I did icing my shoulder after that afternoon

at what ranges do you plan on shooting with your bps? thats the invector plus choke system; same as my winchester super x2 and i have a 4" rifled choke tube i bought...with remington buckhammer slugs its 6" groups @ 100 yards with open sights shooting off a caldwell led sled...and inside 50 yards its a three shot cloverleaf. just an option and a choke costs a lot less than a new barrel; but for optimum performance you cannot beat a fully rifled barrel.

After walking the land, when I was chasing birds this weekend, the perfect afternoon stand location (if we have a NW wind) would have shots out to about 60-70 yards over a swamp.
