invisible fencing?

I would like to know your thoughts. I have a 10 week old lab and am contemplating on either getting a kennel outside or do invisible fencing where he can go in or out of the garage for him. What are you thoughts on invisible fencing, good or bad? Are there different brands out there that are better than others? I am spending lots of time with him right now, but am looking for something to keep him busy while we are at work. I just want the best for him. PS. I do have somewhat close neighbors also. Any suggestions? thanks. KOOBA

We had it installed in early september for our two dogs and it is unbelievable. They pick up on their "area" real quick and are a LOT calmer at night when you get home. Our two dogs will usually come inside in the evening and they usually go into the family room and fall asleep. I would definetly suggest invisible fencing over a kennel for the dogs.

I don't know about letting him in the garage during the day though. Our one pup is 6 months old and we left the garage open one day and she drug out a few things in the yard and chewed them up pretty good. They will get a little bored without you around and look for stuff to entertain themselves with. But overall it is unreal the difference in them now that they don't have to sit in the kennel all day long. Our one dog has knee/hip problems and I have noticed a big difference in her level of soreness too. Laying on the grass is a lot easier on her then the cement or the wooden benches we have in their kennel.

I read the forum about them but I have a question. I am looking at purchasing the Innotek SD 3000. It has 500' fencing and also comes with a remote trainer for up to 150 yards. The question is how close can they get before they get hit with it? I have a narrow area between my house and the neighbors. I would like to put it through there so she can get to the front yard. I wouldnt want her to get zapped while doing that.

I have an 11 month old lab. Is it to young to start him on invisible fencing? What commands need to be inplace and mastered before you use this? if any? My dog can sit but doesn't fully understand stay yet. Is it ok to use this fencing then or wait untill stay is fully understood? KOOBA

It depends on the model. You can set most models very low and they essentially have to get over the fence to set it off. The downside to this is that there is a very small band of boundary to stop them. In other words there is about a 1 foot or less area that will trigger the collar. If they get past that space they are free. If it trips the collar 1 foot before then you have 2 feet with the foot on the other side of the boundary. Make sense?

I have the Innotek Contain and Train system for my 10 month old lab. She's been trained on it for several months now and has gotten 'tickled' a few times...she's to the point where she won't go near the boundary even when she's not wearing the collar. They do learn the boundary fairly quickly if you work with them.

I like the Innotek system. You can adjust how close to the line they can get before they're warned. I also like this system because it comes with a remote so the collar can be used as her hunting collar, too. It was about $200 and well worth it.
