1990 120hp Johnson Lower Unit

Have a clicking sound from the lower unit as I let up on the throttle. Have winterized the head and am in the process of pulling the lower unit. Did have a slighly milky look to the lube.

I have rebuilt car motors and am fairly mehanical. Have any of you rebuilt a lower unit or am I better off getting a used unit.

If you let up fast on the throttle the prop will begin to spin backwards and you will hear the clicking sound.

I probably should clarify, it does it once in a while at steady throttle and when I let up gradually it like a sharp clacking sound.

I have done chrysler ones a couple of times. You will need a good service manual and a seal kit. I would shop around. With the season ending you can get pretty cheap labor over the winter if you give it to someplace for the winter. Check with TC Outboards. They did mine for 200 dollars two years ago.
