Tom Wilson
Rapids is a good place to go, but there definitely will be a crowd. It is also a crazy walk to get down in there. I suggest traveling light. If you do go, go early and try to get one of the small points that jut out into the water. If the water level is down you might have to do some mudding to get out to where the birds will be. Good Luck

Guest
I never hunted rapids lake.. duck hunting is enough work without the long walk. There is a slough in louisville swamp on the far south side of the unit close to Jordan that you can drive to that can be ok early season.. you need a boat there, its deep. If you are using an inflatable I would be very careful with all the lumber.Rice lake by the bloomington ferry bridge is also a good place to hunt, but there is no shortage of hunters there. Beavers often dam up the creek access to the lake so an inflatable would be high risk, its not too bad if the creek doesnt have a dam. Very shallow lake on the average, but very deep muck under that water.Lots of water in Carlos avery. It has good days and bad.I highly recommend finding a canoe or something a bit more durable for hunting. That water is cold for a rubber boat subject to puncture. Kodiak
bring your billy club and some good walking shoes, a good idea would be to bring a deer cart to put all your decoys and things on to get stuff down there, but the only drawback on that would be pulling that thing back up the hill that goes down to the lake. it is a decent walk back there so like the guy said before, pack light and prepare for the crowds, get there EARLY... I bowhunt rapids quite often and i have seen some mallards, no geese, but a lot of pelicans been hanging around there lately. I have even seen some bald eagles down there, i wonder if the eagles spook the ducks? On the youth hunt, the kids that went down there all had success, good luck tommorrow!
