new 28 ga. grouse gun!!!

My buddy called and asked if I wanted to go to a gun show today. He said the proceeds were going to the take a kid hunting program, so I said what the heck, I'd go. He was looking for a deer rifle... I had no intentions on buying any gun... well, I bought several!

I've always wanted 28 gauge for grouse hunting, when walking around I saw a booth that was selling Mossberg's new over/under! They sure looked nice and seemed like they had a good quality fit and finish and upon further examination I saw they had a 28 ga! Well I decided to buy it (and the matching 12 for myself and got the little guy the matching .410)! They pu together a fantastic package deal. The 28 and 12 both came with 5 chokes and beautiful recievers w/ gold inlays and satin finish wood. The price on these (brand new!) were in the upper $400's each... I felt a real steal compared to what you pay for other big name O/U's. If you are in the market, take a look at these, I think you will be surprised!

Now to sell my other two double barrels before the wife sees the credit card bill! hehehe

Also I bought JR. another little gun to get him started off right. It's called a Cricket .22, It's a Single Shot w/ a laminated wood stock & 16 1/2" barrel. It's only 2 1/2 lbs and has a scope or I can re-install the factory peep sight. It fits my 9 yr old perfect! He's really itchin' to get back out to the squirrel and grouse woods! This gun seemed like the PERFECT beginners gun...

Good luck with your new guns. I sincerely hope Mossberg got their s%*t together on their new double barrels. I have heard an extraordinary amount of bad reviews on the Mossberg Dbs.

The thing I had heard about the mossbergs is that if you pull the triggger with the action open the firing pin will hit the end of the barrel when you close it. I hope this makes sense. I actually saw this first hand when looking at them at Gander. I noticed the damage and asked about it. I have also read this in some reviews. Other then that I think they are a good gun for the $$. I almost bought one. GOod luck on the new purchases!

I've always wanted a 28 ga Red Label.

Two things keeps me from spending the cash...

1.)Shell price is 300% higher than 20 ga.for some reason.

2.)Chasing grouse and swamp bats really abuses a gun.

My 24" upland BPS is trashed but has a lot of memories.

I took a digger on a wet downfall the other morning and chipped/cracked my forearm. I made the mistake of using "Gorilla Glue" and it expanded and looks horrible.It seems to go with the bent rib and worn out blueing in my hand area.

Maybe when I turn 50 a sxs will be in order....9/8/2007!

Five years ago I found a new Remington 870 28ga. I have not seen one since. Anyways, it is a good grouse gun. The shells are hareder to find and more expensive than standard shotgun ammo. I have been using 7.5s for grouse. I would say that it is a lot better than a .410 in terms of patterning. It may be just a tad lighter than my 20ga 870.

At the same store I also bought a new browning 30/06 pump rifle. I don't see many of those around either.

There is just over 1/2 pound of difference between the 28 and 20... the 28 is 6.3#'s and the 20 is 6.9#'s. The 12 is 7.7#'s. I figure the 28 with 2 shells won't even tip the scales at 6 1/2 pounds... a pump or auto loader w/ 5 shells should be well into the 7's....

Yeah the little guy is pretty pumped... He asks me almost every day "when are we going hunting again". I'll try to remember my camera and post acouple pics of our hunt 2 weeks ago.... my 1st hunt with my son and maybe the last with my old yellow lab ...

Last hunt for the 'practice gun' and probably the ol' yellow dog too!

It was a great afternoon for dad and son... got to chat with a CO, get a few birds, get the dog out 1 more time and help field dress and drag a bear out! Pretty eventful day... here's a few pics...

Bringing the 'new' gun up for the duck opener... if the ducks aren't flying, gonna pull it out and chase some ruffies around!
