Wacky rig

Lip hooked

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to drop a note and say how much I like this forum. After looking back and reading some of the archive posts I was curious about the Senko, especially when it is rigged wacky style. I had never seen that before. I went out and picked up a pack and some circle type hooks.

So I am out with my dad and uncle, three of us in my boat, and we are fishing some mid-lake humps loaded with milfoil. I pull out that Senko and hook it right in the middle. My dad looks over and just busts out laughing. I think he thought that I was goofing around. It does look like something my 6 year old would come up with if he didn’t know any better. As it turned out I’m not sure if it was the day, the right color, dumb luck, or a combination of all of them but I had them out fished by about 3 to 1. No real size but the bite was hot. As a side note every one was hooked in the corner of their mouths, easy release.

Thanks to all of you who post advise and tips.

Darren,

First off, welcome to FishingMN.com! Glad to have you aboard!

Wacky rigging is a great way to target bass, and it's no surprise to me that you had success. I did notice that you left one possible variable for success out though... it could have been the angler for the reason why you caught 3 to 1 over everyone else smile.gif

Wacky rigging is also great for using around and under docks. That set-up skips very well and can be pitched underneath a dock, floating raft, over-hanging trees, etc.

Also great in river situations too...

Hiya -

They really are amazingly effective at times aren't they? I think it's just a bait that is in their face but in such a subtle non-threatening way that it can get even pretty neutral to negative fish to hit.

A variation on wacky rigging that has sort of been forgotten is to take a floating plastic worm, rig it wacky style, then put a finishing nail into the head of the worm. Pitch it out and just dead stick it. I mean - just let it sit. After a while the line will just start to move off. It can be a great way to catch tough fish after a cold front. Obviously not a covering water deal, but if you know they're there... First time I saw it in action was Ron Linder fishing a heavily-pressured lake near Walker after a wicked August cold front. He anchored on an inside turn, and he'd just pitch the thing to the weedline, set his rod down, and drink coffee until a fish picked it up. He probably caught 20 bass without ever moving his boat. It was unreal... Then he moved to the next inside turn and did it again...

Cheers,

Rob Kimm
