Fish on the BBQ grill.

I tried to grill some eye's tonight.Didn't turn out to bad, at least I could eat the fillets.I sprayed a square of foil with butter, layed the fillet in and sprinckled dill and lemmon pepper on them, then folded the foil over and pinched the ends shut.They turned out way to dry, and still had the fishy taste, but were edeable.
I would like to here a few grill recipies to try the next time, as the wife and I really like grilled food.She wont eat fish other than grilled.

The only fish i have grilled would be pike and salmon. Two days ago i had THE best grilled salmon i have ever had, the marinade was excellent. Not sure how it would work on walleye, but i am going to try it. If you like tomatos, i have put fish in foil, with some dill and garlic&herb, and pour a jar of salsa over the top, bake for like 15-20 minutes. The wife has a tequilla lime marinade that is pretty good too. I can send you something if i had your email. Good Luck!

When doing fish like you did you are essentially steaming them. Two things are important:

1. Use enough butter as this is what is provided the "steam"

2. Use a heavy duty foil or double wrap if it is regular. Roll the seams up nice and tight to ensure that it is almost airtight. This will keep the filets from drying out.

Fish are excellent when done this way on the grill and you can throw almost anything in with them to give them a unique flavor. Dill, garlic, onions, pickles, Mrs. Dash etc......... Are all good ideas.

benny, try lemon pepper, couple slabs of butter, drizzle on a little pickle juice...don't over cook, takes only a couple minutes to cook...

This is usually pretty good.. like the others said double wrap to keep the steam in use enough butter, but try cutting up a red pepper, yellow pepper, green pepper, and spread the peppers over the fish and butter, you can also season to taste, but it is usually very good for pike. Good luck

I haven't tried this on Walleyes, but it works great on Sunny and Perch fillets. Put a layer of fillets on foil, cover with slices of lemon and onion, preferably a mild red one. Repeat the layers of fish , lemon, and onion. Put a couple of bay leaves on top with several pats of butter. Seal up the foil and cook it over indirect heat[off to the side.] I've cooked this as a low fat dish by leaving off the butter and adding more lemon. Cook it only until the fish is flakey. Don't overcook.
Practice CPR---Catch, phillet, and refrigerate.

Thanks for all the replys, I think I cooked it to long and over direct heat for a few minutes .I hope the next batch will turn out better this week end.

I have an indoor grill similar to a George Foreman type. Except mine has removable grill irons that make it very easy to clean.Also, it has a timer.

Anyway, I have found walleye turn out perfect on this. They get golden on both sides, stay moist, and don't stick at all. Of course, I put butter, seasonings, etc on. And I squirt Reallemon liberally on the top side right before its done. I used to grill fish on open type grills, but half the fish would burn and stay on the wire grills, or I would have to use aluminum foil, which, yes, is more like steaming the fish.

Also, if you like grilled asparagus, it is great with grilled walleye.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
