Bud
Does anyone know of a good discussion or news group where I can get help on repair for a 1972 9.9 Chrysler outboard? My son lives 750 miles away and is having trouble getting the lower unit off. He took off the bolts from the lower unit and it drops about 2 inches and stops. I told him he would have to release the shifter rod and then it should fall off. He says he only sees one screw under the hood to release the shifter rod but he cant get to it. Its down to deep and to close to the side of the housing to get a screw driver on it. He also sees a steel ball in the linkage that fits tight and rotates in a socket when it shifts but he is afraid to try to pop it out. Thanks for any help. Valv
I am not sure and I don't remember exactly but I don't think you have to disconnect shifter rod on Chryslers.Probably the best site for this is Iboats.com, also if you post this in the Equipment Expert forum it might get more replies. Bobby Bass
You might look and see if there is a sideplate on the motor or screen that he can remove. Behind it the shift rod/linkage can be disconnect. It splits into two seperate rods. The lower unit should come off then.

If it don't have one my evinrude you needed to put it in forward to raise it up enough to get at it.
