Test drove some goose calls today!

I was kicking around in the new scheels today in fargo and i got a chance to blow some of the high end goose calls. I tried the Tim Grounds pro super mag, the strait meat honker and the heartland flatliner. All nice calls but the one that worked the best for me was the strait meat.... I am not a expert caller but I was able to make that one sound the best.... Anybody else try these calls? I think I am sold on the strait meat.

I have the supermag and like that a lot, I have one buddy that blows all Heartland.......pretty much whatever works the best for yourself

I am a huge Tim Grounds fan and have several of his calls and like them very much, that being said I have also heard from several guys that the straight meat is a great call.

I started out with a SMH and thought it was great, but I didn't care for the mouthpiece and it seemed to take a lot of air to get the sounds I wanted no matter how I tuned it. I picked up a Super Mag last spring and it has been great. I couldn't be happier with the call. I am now able to make sounds that I couldn't get before and I am making them with ease. I also have a Heartland X-out and a Sean Mann Shorty and the Grounds is the only one that I blow on any more. It all comes down to which call fits you best and it sounds like you found one that fits. All the higher end calls are great, but you have to find the one that fits you the best.

I have a Zink Call by Fred Zink, the SR-1. Fred had mentioned in his calling instructional video, that he has won all his calling championships from Tim Grounds calls. I haven't personally test drove those yet, but just guessing, the two calls might be very, very similar.

One point I must mention, if this is your first high end call (at least in my case anyway) I would pay more for the instructional video than the call itself. In most cases from what I heard, if you were a flute blower before, the video is a must.

I have the Sean Stahl's Honker Talk video. It is well worth the 20 bucks. Right now I am blowing a Foiles Meatgrinder. I have learned how to blow it fairly good and am wondering if that is why the Strait Meat was very easy for me to blow. Maybe because they have close to the same guts. Anyway I made it sound better than the grounds. I am just looking for the call that I can sound good on.

That is the key. The best thing a person can do when looking for a goose call is to go to the store and try some out. If someone has never blown a call before I would suggest getting a cheaper one to start out on and then go out and try some after a little experience. Blowing a goose call well isn't an overnight thing.

I have a "Showtime" by foiles and I just can't wait till sat. I think it is a great call. Hopefully the geese think the same.
