homemade underwater camera

I got this kit to make a underwater camera off the net and it says i can add a switch to turn the lights off and on. is it worth adding it or just let them be on all the time

I've built several underwater cams from scratch using a ccd board cam. They work really well. The cameras have the infra red lights built right onto the board and they are on all the time. I would add the switch so you can turn them off. Over time you will find the lights pretty much useless. When it gets dark out I have yet to see the lights be of any assistance. Including a few high end brand name cams. hope this helps a bit. Paul

I made a camera too. Not from a kit though,I made it from scratch.
I would use the switch. Theres times when you wont need the ir eluminator's. Where did you find the kit at. Did it come with a monitor. You can get a B/W tv with a/v jacks for like 25 bucks at wallmart.

Paul Rohweller, my ir eluminators work great. When a fish shows up they shine up nice. I have a deer feeder out in the yard and I set up my camera there. It lights up a deer at 50 ft away. I can see eyeballs at 100 ft. I dont use the camera to fish with much. Too much froggin around trying to fish and adjust the camera plus watch the graph.
I want to use it on a downrigger out on Superior. There's usually time to frog around out there.

The lights might be just the ticket for nighttime out of the water, for me it seems when I use the lights after dark they light up alot of suspended particles in the water making viewing tough. After dark I run my vexilar... If I cant get my aqua view sold I might put it inside a birdhouse this summer just to see whats goin on. I've also got a homemade cam for sale, works great! Then I will be down to one, and thats enough! lolol Paul

Didnt come with a monitor got mine at walmart 30 bucks with a radio to.

I did a seach and found a kit. It looks like mine,useing the PVC fittings. I Couldnt tell how they sealed were the wires come out. With a little mod. I used a valve stem.
