Lawn Tip #3

For those that don't know, whether you have a 21" push mower, a 36/48" garden tractor, or zero-turn lawn mower, a company called "JRCO" makes a front mounted dethatcher/rake for your mower.

What it is, is a steel tined rake that you mount on the front of your mower, where you can set the depth of the tines. This way, instead of hand raking your entire yard, or renting a dethatcher (whether this fall or next spring) you can just do it all in one step.

This works well, even in the spring, because you can set the rake at just the right height so you can scrape up matted down leaves without digging into the soil, if you don't get your leaves picked up this fall.

One drawback, obviously, is if you bag your lawn, you'll have more to bag, since this will bring up some thatch as well.

For those that run 21" mowers, I know of a couple of mowing shops that rent these, that you can mount on your mower and bring back.

They run about a $300 - $600 investment.

IMO, well worth it, if you have a medium to large area that you're hand raking, or if you rent a dethatcher.
