I'm missing something...

Recommended Posts

Okay... So this last weekend I was out night fishing, taking advantage of the nice full moon...

There's a point I know of on a lake... Where a weedy bay joins the rest of the lake at a rocky shore... There's a stretch of about 200 yards, where one can hit walleye rather well...

Only this past weekend... Other than a pair of 17 inchers just after sundown, all I could pull in were small (Sub 13 inch) eyes...

The hot bait and tactic seemed to be the Mepps Walleye Killer tipped with a leech.

I can't quite wrap my head around why there were only small eyes, when normally there are perfect eaters. (The lake has a good population of large Walleye.)

The only thing I can think...

I hooked into, and lost a LARGE musky early on... Which might have pushed out the usual pattern... But it was nothing but small-eyes for the remaining 5 hours...

****

It's not a big deal... But I was hoping someone could shed some light on what might be going on, just for the point of advancing my walleyeducation.

Thanks in Advance

It sounds like a good spot you've found, I wouldn't worry too much about it until you go there a few more times and don't connect with the fish you want.

Then start looking around and try to figure out what they're feeding on and where. You have to decide if you're going to wait for them to come to you, or if you're going to go find them. I wouldn't look too far away, try shallower, or the next break deeper, or over the open water, or along the weeds, or around the rocky point, etc. Try bigger baits, or smaller baits, until you find what works.

If I had to guess though, I'd put my money on the bigger fish being either suspended in the open water, or else being in the weeds in the bay.
