Power Pro Knot HELP!

Katman

Recommended Posts

My friends finally convinced me to try their and most of you guys here's power pro line. I'm a die hard mono guy. I only use 10lbs. Nothing more and nothing less. I purchased some 30lbs power pro yesterday and deceided to go out fishing with it. I went by myself to Hastings. Got 4 cats only...biggest was about 4lbs. What I noticed was my knot strength was very LOW! And you can't bite the line off line my mono. The line was very sensitive and powerful but I kept breaking my line. What knots do you guys use for this stuff? I'm not sure what knots I've used because I never cared to know. I only tie two knots. One on the shaft of the hook (like the packaged eagleclaws) and one ontop of the eye. I go through the eye of the hook or swivel, come back and loop it around my pinky, wrap the section between my hands and hook eye, and come back and go through the loop on my pinky. Any help will do on getting my knots to hold. Anyone have pictures too? grin.gif

I like to use power pro for muskies and cats and I've usually used the Palomar knot or a snell knot on circle hooks. The Palomar Knot is easy to learn and you can find it on the Power Pro HSOforum. The type of snell knot I use is also easy to use and I learned it from Steve Hoffmann from In-Fisherman. I'll look to see if I can find an illustration somewhere for the snell knot.

Oh, I like to use 65-80 pound test power pro because it's got more thickness making it easier to handle and easier on your hands in landing fish and pulling snag situations.

Good Luck<

I didn't even think of finding the HSOforum..hahahha. What was I thinking. And lucky me...I got the line out and threw the box away. How bad can it get? confused.gif I'm glad I have you guys around. I'm heading out to Hastings again tonight. Hope I have better luck tonight. Time to try my new knots! Someone told me to use a double trilene knot. Is that one better?

Were your knots slipping or was the line actually breaking? If you were fishing from shore in Hastings, I know there is a lot of rock in the water from the 61 bridge all the way up to the Lock and Dam. Even with my 65lb. Stren super-braid it is hard to avoid breaking over there. Like people have said on here before the monofilament is more abrasion resistant when it comes to fishing the sharp rocky areas and the super braids are great fishing the wood. You could setup two different reels or an extra spool, one mono & one braid for different situations.

Palomar is super, duper strong and its one of the easiest knots to tie as well. Almost easier than lacing my shoes up! wink.gif

I've pulled and pulled and pulled to get my rigs out of snags and have never had a knot come undone trying to get my rig back. The latest one I remember is I straightened both eyes on the swivel into long ovals, and nearly straightened out a 10/0 Gamakatsu Octopus hook trying to free it from some wood. Thats with 80lb PP all tied up with Palomar knots. Palomar is the real deal!

There is one thing I feel when tying any knot with PP the line needs to be wet when tied. If it is not the knot can slip and come undone if not cinched down wet.

Has anyone else found this to be true?

I was actually fishing by the dam. There were a few snags but nothing too bad. What I saw was my line was breaking at the eye of the hook. I didn't know you were suppose to double that up. The way I tied it was very similar to an UNI knot. And I don't really wet the line...only with my mouth real quick. I will try wetting the line tonight with water and will be using the palomar knot.

Wetting the knot has more to do with lessing the friction that can cause a knot to weaken with mono I believe. I have never had a problem with Power Pro but what ever gives you confidence in your gear I am all for it. It sure couldnt hurt! smile.gif

I went out last night and tried the knots and they were awesome! I was using the UNI and PALOMAR knots. They were comparibly stronger! I'm still not use to tying on the pp line yet but I guess it'll come with time. I only had 1 set up last night....got my rig back from every snag! I'm starting to think I love this line... smirk.gif

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
