Pick UP Truck Camper

Good, Bad or ugly. Your thoughts please.

I have had a pick up camper for the past 6-7 years and I think they are great. They can be a pain to load and unload, but not too bad usually. We went camping last week and got 10.5 mpg with a 3/4 ton chev going the speed limit. I like being able to pull the boat or 4 wheeler trailer going camping. It is also nice not to have to worry so much about wind, rain, etc. when camping. I have watched others suffer in wet rainy tents while we are nice and dry in our camper. I even took it ice fishing on LOW once and had a great time staying out there 2 days fishing out of a portable with the snowmobile. Thats my opinion.

Question on useage. When you take your camper to the campground do you generally take it off the truck so that you can use you truck to go somewhere, or do you leave it on your truck and then hook it back up. I'm considering one and plan to use it for fly fishing trips where I'll need my truck all day and just wondering how much of a PIA it is to unload/reload them off/on the truck.

I don't usualy take it off of the truck when camping. I took one up to Canada and we just hauled it with us to different lakes. If you have a good jack system it might not be a problem to take off & on. I guess it depends on the size/wait of the camper and the jack set up. It would also depend on what you set it on when not on the truck. i am not sure I would use mine with only jacks for support, I set it on RR ties when in storage at home. There are so many differnt layout, just get one you are comfortable with. You may also want to be sure you get a heater and Refridge that you like. If i were to get another on I think it would be a bit smaller then the current one I have. It is a 10' so is a bit of a monster on the truck, but hauls fine.
